New Firefox Nightly and Aurora logos unearthed, and how to enable channel switching

Firefox Nightly and Aurora logos
Later today, Firefox will undergo its biggest developmental upheaval ever. Mozilla-central, the source of nightly builds, will be renumbered to version 5 -- and at long last, after years of wallowing around version 1, Mozilla's rendering and layout engine, Gecko, will also have its version number updated to match Firefox.

Shortly thereafter, Firefox's new channel system will be implemented. Firefox 5a2 will be introduced as the first Aurora build, and we should also see a Firefox 6 Nightly build. While we we're not sure where they came from, one Sören Hentzschel seems to have unearthed the new Nightly and Aurora logos (see above), along with new About Firefox dialogs (after the break).

In other news, if you want to take a sneak peek at the new 'channel changing' technology that will be introduced in upcoming Firefox builds, head to about:config and create a new string called app.update.desiredChannel -- the value doesn't matter. Then open Help > About Firefox and you'll be able to switch channel, but it doesn't do anything just yet (image after the break). Here's hoping that Firefox channel switching is smoother than Chrome.

T-Mobile once again expands their iPhone friendly network coverage

Continuing their long-running expansion program, T-Mobile has now announced 10 new metro areas that will be making use of the 1900 MHz spectrum they gained from AT&T when their merger failed. Unlike T-Mo's traditional AWS spectrum, that's just the kind of HSPA+ your unlocked iPhone can make good, fast use of. Here's T-Mobile's full list:

Central and Southern Arizona

  • Phoenix, including Tempe, Scottsdale, Glendale, Peoria, Paradise Valley, Surprise and Ahwatukee
  • Mesa, including Chandler and Gilbert
  • Tucson, including South Tucson, Marana, and Vail

San Francisco Bay Area

  • Silicon Valley, including Cupertino, Sunnyvale, Mountain View, Santa Clara, San Jose
  • Oakland
  • San Francisco

Central Valley, California

  • Stockton
  • Modesto

South Florida

  • Miami, including Coral Gables and Miami Beach
  • Fort Lauderdale, including Hollywood

With the new areas accounted for, T-Mobile has now rolled out their 4G HSPA+ network to a total of 15 locations including the previously announced Baltimore, Houston, Kansas City, Las Vegas and Washington D.C. In addition to that, they note network enhancements are also coming to Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, the New York metro area, Philadelphia, San Diego and Seattle.

As expected, their wooing of iPhone owners continues as well with the claim that testing has shown that unlocked iPhone 4S devices running over their 4G HSPA+ network have on average, 70% faster download speeds than iPhone 4S devices on AT&T?s network.

British royal family announces iOS and Android wedding app

William and KateTo celebrate the imminent marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton, the Royal Collection will release an Android an iOS app that chronicles the last seven royal marriages, including Queen Victoria's marriage to Prince Albert in 1840.

Ironically, the app won't actually feature anything to do with William and Kate's marriage -- rather, it will focus on the "tradition, splendor and romance" that are intrinsic to British royal marriages. "[The app] will share the stories of past royal weddings and offer a wealth of historical context for the ceremony on April 29."

Unfortunately, the app, which has been lumbered with the fantastically creative name of 'Royal App,' won't be available until April 18 -- just 11 days before Kate's big day. It won't be free, either: it'll cost the rather princely sum of £1.79, or three of your Tea Party-loving dollars. The money will go to the Royal Collection, though, which is a good cause!

Amazon Appstore update pushing out, fixes Android 4.2 login issue

Android Central

Since Android 4.2 started getting into peoples hands, whichever device it may be on, the Amazon Appstore has been experiencing an extremely irritating bug. Whatever happens, the Appstore application would log you out of its own accord forcing a re-login to use. Worse still, according to several Android Central Forums users, each login would add another authorized device to your overall list.

Cueboy Quest is an adorable 8-bit style physics game

cueboyquest
Yes, that's right, I said adorable. Because Cueboy Quest really is!

You play an 8-bit cowboy whose goal on each level is to get to the door (and thus to the next level), but the door is often locked. To get it to open, you must shoot at one or more targets, and those targets aren't always in your line of sight. For example, on one level the the target is a balloon which is stuck all the way at the other end of the screen. You must first nudge it free, and then watch it float up and try to shoot it before it floats clear off the screen. Your bullets are chunky pixels that have some weight - the have arcing trajectories, so you don't always hit exactly where you aim.

There's another level where you must jump on the balloon as it floats up, use it as a platform to get to the other end of the screen, and then turn to shoot it very quickly before it flies away. Each level is very short, and most of them are quite easy. And not only are the graphics 8-bit blocky, but they're large too. Simply beautiful!

Google promises fix for Android 4.2 December birthday bug

Android Central

Good news for anyone with a birthday or anniversary coming up next month, as Google has confirmed that it has a fix in the works for the recently-discovered "December birthday" bug in Android 4.2. The glitch resulted in December being absent from the date selector in the Android 4.2 People app, as you can see in the shot above.

The fix will most likely take the form of an over-the-air update for devices running Android 4.2 -- the Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10. No timeframe was provided for the OTA, but with December looming, we'd expect it to hit in a matter of days.

Here's the statement from the official Android Google+ account --

We discovered a bug in the Android 4.2 update, which makes it impossible to enter December events in optional fields of the People app (this bug did not affect Calendar). Rest assured, this will be fixed soon so that those of you with December birthdays and anniversaries won't be forgotten by your friends and family.

Runkeeper's got a new Holo look and get's friendly with some new features

Runkeeper

The folks at FitnessKeeper, Inc. have pushed out a big update to the popular RunKeeper app, bringing a holo-like interface and a slew of new social features to help make staying healthy more fun. The biggest of these is the new Friends tab, which ranks buddies gathered from your contacts and Facebook by the number of activities completed. You can find these buddies without leaving the app, and even give them a gentle poke if they seem to be slacking using Android's in-app messaging service.

the rest of the changes are pretty darn good as well. The new holo look with tabs and action bar navigation is a welcome sight, there's a new activities page to help keep track of what you've done and what's coming up, and there's now a bit more flexibility when you sign up for a new training plan.

To take advantage of these new features, you'll need to connect RunKeeper to your Facebook account. Since that often can be a security nightmare, there's plenty of information on how to do it safely at the source link. You can grab RunKeeper from the Google Play link above, and catch a few screenshots of the app after the break.

Amazon kicks off Black Friday week with smartphone accessory deals

Android Central

Black Friday's tendrils have crawled upwards to Monday, which means Amazon already has some excellent deals posted. For those of us into all things smartphoney, there are quite a few great accessories and devices that have been significantly marked down. There are also a lot of crazy flash sales going every couple of hours and offer lots of opportunity for those of us that want to get our holiday shopping done early. I just missed out on a 64 GB microSD memory card for $38; they were all sold out in a matter of minutes, so you're going to have to be fast. Let's see what else Amazon is offering...

Internet Explorer 9 nears 4% share on Windows 7, IE6 extinction countdown picks up steam

internet explorer 9 ie9
Microsoft has shared some news about the state of its most and least loved Web browsers -- Internet Explorer 9 and 6, respectively. Even with IE9 only recently exiting beta, Microsoft reports that 3.6% of Windows 7 users are now running the new browser (no mention of Vista... what's with that?). The post also reveals that the adoption rate is almost five times what IE8 garnered in the early going.

It's also interesting to note that there are now more than 1,000 sites utilizing Internet Explorer 9's Windows 7 integration features -- like the new desktop notification support we showed you in Hotmail.

But perhaps the best news of all is that Microsoft's IE6countdown.com now has more than 400 partners and is generating nearly two million pageviews per month, helping to lure users away from the woefully out-of-date browser. Can the end come soon enough, DS readers?
