Interlocked is a three-dimensional brain teaser

interlocked
Back when I was a kid, I used to love crafting ornate puzzle boxes out of Lego. There would be just one way to open the box, by carefully shifting and rotating a bunch of pieces. Well, either that, or breaking the box in frustration.

Interlocked takes that spirit and turns it into a beautiful Flash game. It's a good thing the soundtrack is soothing, because the game itself can get pretty frustrating.

At the start of each level, you're presented with a box built out of blocks in different colors. You can click and drag the mouse to rotate the box any which way. Once you decide you want to shift a part of the box, hit SPACE to switch into "move" mode. You can then click any part of the box and drag it. Of course, you can only move a part as long as nothing is in its way. So it becomes a matter of understanding how the box is built, and what parts you need to move around so you could eventually take the box apart.

It's a tricky, difficult game, but it's a great brain teaser -- and definitely a keeper.

Titanium Backup ? zip through a restore

Titanium Backup is one of the essential items in a serial Android ROM flasher’s toolkit.  It was one of the first apps that allowed a rooted device to fully backup a user’s apps and data and made restores after flashing a new ROM  much easier. But it still meant flashing a new ROM, rebooting, downloading  [...]

CIBC Mobile Payment App reaches BlackBerry App World for the rare chance you can actually use it

CIBC Mobile Payment App reaches BlackBerry App World for the rare chance you can actually use it

Rogers kicked off Canadian NFC mobile payments at the start of the month through what was mostly a ceremonial gesture -- until the CIBC app arrived, locals simply had to wait. It's at last time try some Suretap mobile shopping now that the CIBC Mobile Payment App has popped up in BlackBerry App World. As promised, the title will let Canucks tap to pay with a credit card (up to $50 at once) at the 17 store chains offering use of a MasterCard PayPass or Visa PayWave terminal. The catch remains the sheer number of conditions that need to be in place: on top of requiring an NFC-aware SIM card, a CIBC credit card and the right stores, the early software only works its magic with the BlackBerry Bold 9900; Curve 9380 support depends on a future update. Having the crucial app is still a step forward, and the handful of trailblazers can always recount tales of buying Timbits with their Bolds while those on other platforms have to sit tight until 2013.

The week in international Android news - Nov. 17, 2012

Android Central

This week was Nexus week, and Google's new smartphone and tablet dominated the past seven days' international Android news. The Nexus 4 and Nexus 10 went on sale, and promptly sold out in Australia, Europe and the United States, as buyers battled against technical issues with Google Play and Google Wallet and attempted to place orders. As of this weekend, many devices are in buyers hands -- the first Nexus tablets started arriving on Wednesday, followed a day later by the initial batch of Nexus 4s.

HTC Desire C coming to RadioShack No-Contract Wireless for $119.99

HTC Desire C

RadioShack is adding to its lineup of entry-level devices that it offers on its self-branded prepaid wireless service today with the HTC Desire C. This pint-sized HTC handset may carry the Desire name, but it looks very much like the One series of devices from HTC in 2012. The internals are decidedly low-end, however. The Desire C has a 3.5-inch 320x480 (HVGA) display, a 600MHz processor and 512MB of RAM -- all running with Android 4.0 and Sense on top.

The 'Shack offers the Desire C for $119.99 on its no-contract prepaid service with monthly payments of $50 for unlimited calls, texts and data (first 1GB at full speed) or $60 for the same and 2.5GB of full-speed data. Both prices include a subscription to the Muve Music service, which offers both streaming and downloads of a wide music selection on the device.

Taxi service apps could be hit by a proposed ban on GPS metering

Taxi service apps could be hit by a proposed ban on GPS meteringTaxi and car-sharing apps which quote for journeys based on GPS data could find themselves outlawed by regulators. Transport authorities across fifteen US and Canadian cities are looking at a set of rules that would prohibit anything except physical metering to calculate the cost of a trip. The proposals would also put the kibosh on demand pricing, whereby quotes automatically rise when more people are making bookings, and also on the use of drivers who don't have proper taxi licenses. Some of these practices are already banned in a number of states, and in fact three online transport services -- Zimride, SideCar and our old friend Uber -- were fined in California this week precisely for allowing unqualified hands to take the wheel. If the current proposals are adopted, the role of smartphones would likely be restricted to hailing regular taxis or putting electric money into traditional cabbies' pockets.
