University of Athens prints polymer circuits with lasers, speeds us towards lowcost electronics

The dream of ubiquitous technology revolves around cheaper materials, and polymer circuits could help make the dream a reality... if the solvents used to produce the circuits didn't cause more problems than they cured, that is. The National Technical University of Athens has developed a more exacting technique that, like most good things in science, solves the crisis with lasers. The approach fires a laser at a polymer layer (covered by quartz) to throw some of that polymer on to a receiving layer; by moving the two layers, the scientists can print virtually any 2D circuit without resorting to potentially damaging chemicals. Any leftover worries center mostly around risks of changing the chemical composition as well as the usual need to develop a reliable form of mass production. Any long-term success with laser-printed polymers, however, could lead to more affordable technology as well as more instances of flexible and wearable gear -- there might not be much of a downside to ditching the circuit status quo.

Windows 8 wallpaper available to download, Jupiter and Twin UI spotted

windows 8 wallpaper
With Windows 8 milestone 3 now up for grabs for select Microsoft Connect partners, it's inevitable that leaked bits and pieces will start popping up around the Web. In fact, the first "official" wallpaper image from the still-brewing OS is already making the rounds.

As you can see, it's got a similar feel to the good ol' Windows 7 default background, but features a more subdued smattering of cerulean hues. Those of you who want to use the Windows 8 wallpaper on your current desktop can download it from our file dump.

A few other details have been revealed, too. According to ZDNet's source, the Windows 8 Jupiter libraries and Twin UI are starting to take shape -- though all that's been located thus far are "[various files] scattered throughout the OS" and the aptly-named twinui.dll.

Tips And Tricks For Your iPad

Apple have designed the iPad to be easy to use, in fact even a two year old can use this device without any problems whatsoever. This makes it a very attractive option for people who are used to using an iPhone or for those who are not. However, there are still a few things about the device that do need a little bit of explaining. Soft Reset Explained: Although the iPad is pretty robust in so far as there are [...]

Classic Shell now makes Internet Explorer 9 look like IE8

classic shell make windows 7 look like xp
If you used Windows XP for a long time (who didn't?), one of the biggest changes when moving to Windows 7 or Vista was the massively-altered Explorer. While the new Explorer introduces some useful new features, it also removed just as many -- which is where Classic Shell comes in!

We've covered Classic Shell before, but here's the crib note: Classic Shell restores almost every Windows XP-era Explorer feature. The best change, in our opinion, is the reemergence of the 'up' arrow, meaning you now navigate without using the Windows Vista/7 'breadcrumbs' address bar. The status bar yet again shows the total size of your selection, and -- praise be! -- the diabolical Windows 7 Copy File 'copy and replace?' dialog has been replaced with a Windows XP lookalike (image after the break).

New to the most recent version of Classic Shell is the ability to make IE9 look like IE8. With Classic Shell the title bar yet again has a caption, so you can see the full title of Web pages. The current security zone and loading progress indicator have been put back into the status bar, too. If you enable 'Show tabs on a separate row,' it's almost like using IE8.

Finally, Classic Shell replaces the omnipotent Windows 7 Start Menu with the age-old 'classic' Windows 2000/XP-style Start Menu. Classic Shell makes the Start Menu skinable, too, if you're into the kind of thing.

As awesome as it sounds, we've only touched on a small section of Classic Shell's feature set. Check the Classic Shell site for a complete list. There's a few more images of Classic Shell in action after the break.

Video of Earth Painted by Atmospheric Particles Looks Like a Trippy van Gogh

We saw a still earlier this week, but this NASA visualization video is truly awesome. It shows how aerosols—fine particles suspended in air—travel around the world in a van Gogh-ish dance of color. This is what you are seeing here: More »

Pastebin updated to V3, releases Windows app

pastebin
Pastebin is a very popular website aimed at coders and other nerdy types, which allows them (or should I say, us) to paste and share snippets of code with lovely syntax highlighting.

It has recently undergone a major overhaul which includes the release of a brand new Windows client. The new client lets you create new "pastes" and manage your existing ones. It joins a host of other tools from Pastebin, such as the Google and Chrome extensions, OS X widget and the mobile apps.

If you're currently using Pastebin, the new client is a great addition. And if you haven't tried it before, next time you have a piece of code you want to share or get some feedback on, you could do worse than try out Pastebin.

[Thanks, Jeroen!]

Evernote 5 for Mac exits beta, is now live in the Mac App Store

Back at the beginning of the month, when Evernote 5 for Mac launched in beta, the app's creators warned users that they could suffer data corruption, data loss and other such indignities if they tried out the unfinished software. If you chose to wait, you probably made the right call: just two weeks later, a final, more stable version of the note-taking app is live in the Mac App Store. All told, version 5 has 100-plus new features, with some of the bigger ones including: a left pane showing tags, shortcuts and recent notes; a redesigned note list; and a predictive search feature called Type Ahead. It's free, so you don't have much to lose by checking it out (unless, of course, you find subtle UI tweaks enraging). Or, if you're really that cautious, we've embedded a short "What's new?" video after the break.

Weekly Photo Contest: Weather!

It's time to announce this week's photo contest -- weather! Last time, we focused on fall colors and many of our readers expressed sadness at the fact that in their area, the weather has moved on to be more wintery than autumn-y. To make up for that, this week's contest is simply "weather" which will work no matter where you are in the world! Experiencing glorious sunny, hot days like I am in California? Make the rest of the world jealous with a gorgeous pic showing that off! Still suffering on the East Coast from the destruction of Hurricane Sandy? We want to see that, too. Or if you're in Colorado and already getting hit with snow, show the rest of us (except spoiled Californians) what's coming soon.

In case you missed the point, we want to see photos that show off any and all weather conditions whether it's sunshine, rain, snow, fog, clouds, lightning, hurricanes, or tornados.

Congrats to jeffgoodman1 for winning the "fall colors" photo contest!

The prize: $30 iTunes gift certificate

In addition to a thumbs up from the iMore crew and all of us yelling about how great of a photo star you are, the winner of this week's photography contest will receive a $30 iTunes gift card allowing you to stock up on some of those photography apps you've been dying to buy!

The rules

The rules of entry are very simple. The photo must have been taken with an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch (we'll check the EXIF data of the original file to verify) and any edits must have been done with an iPhone or iPad app. No Photoshop CS6! If you have external lens accessories you are more than welcome to use them. You can submit as many photos as you'd like, but remember, this is a contest, so make sure you submit your best work!

Resources

Now, before you run off to take your photo, remember that it's not technical skill alone that will claim this prize. Even if you're not the best photographer (yet!), a great eye and a great subject can still get you the win.

However, a little help can never hurt, so make sure you check out our iPhone photography series for some tips.

How to submit

Submitting your photos is easy. just head over to the iMore Photography Forum and post your photos to the official contest thread. Don't forget to state which apps, if any, you used to edit your photo!

That's it! Now go out and shoot!

Aiaiai Capital Headphone review

A while back, I reviewed Aiaiai?s TMA-1 headphones, which I quite liked because they sounded really good, were very comfortable and were built to take abuse. After all, they were designed to be DJ headphones. But at $250, they were not cheap. Then came the $97 Tracks portable headphones. These were even more comfortable, but [...]
