Shot Shot Pirate is a fun, simple physics game

shotshotpirate
Shot Shot Pirate is very satisfying, because each level is short and to the point. You know what you have to do and you just do it.

As you may have gathered from the name, you're cast in the role of a pirate. Your goal is to shoot at a diamond and make it fall off a tower of bricks. The height of the tower changes as you progress through the levels. It's not enough to just make the diamond fall off the tower of bricks - it has to fall below a certain line (drawn on the screen) for the level to be completed.

There are also different kinds of bricks, with some heavier than others, and different kinds of ammo. You only get a certain amount of ammo for each level, and when it's gone, you lose. But don't worry! If you don't make it on the first try, it's very easy to restart the level and just give it another shot (or three).

All in all it's a cute game. I've seen similar games with better graphics and music, but the game delivers on its main promise - a few minutes of pure time wasting!

DropSpace adds real Dropbox sync to Android

dropspace
Dropbox offers a lovely client for Android, but it's lacking true "sync" functionality. You can merely browse your Dropbox, pull files into the device, and manually upload specific files.

DropSpace is a little Android app that makes Dropbox on Android work like Dropbox - that is, you get real folder synchronization in the background.

When you run the app you're prompted for your Dropbox credentials. After logging in to Dropbox, you get to select which device folders you'd like to sync to the cloud. It's a straightforward mapping process: You select a folder on the device, and then specify where in Dropbox it should go.

The interface is rather clunky, at least for now. The biggest annoyance is that you can't edit your "sync list": if you add a folder and then wish to remove it, you must delete the entire list of folders and start over.

In terms of functionality, it works quite well. I tested it with the camera folder, and it was nice to be able to take my photos using the lean default Camera app and have them sync up to the cloud instantly.

Arcane Legends Android MMO now available globally

Android Central

After a soft launch in Canada and Australia, Spacetime Studios' free Arcane Legends online game is now available to download in the U.S. I played around with it a fair bit, and it's got some great real-time hack-and-slash action, classic RPG progression, and all of the online multiplayer stuff you'd expect, like cooperating on quests, building guilds, and so on.

If you do end up giving it a shot, we've got a little present for the warriors in the house: Lloyd's Might Arm of Will. It's got a frost particle effect, because we're super-cool. Or something. Look, just go to the STS Nexus button at the top menu bar of the starting home screen after you've made your character and gone through the tutorial, hit the Enter Promo Code button under the Offers tab, and punch in androidcentral111312. Blammo, instead swordage.

Just be warned that the servers are getting hammered pretty hard, since it's launch day for these guys. Any fantasy MMO fans out there? Anyone put time into Gameloft's Order & Chaos? How does it compare?

HTC Droid DNA coming to Verizon on November 21st for $200, pre-orders begin today

HTC Droid DNA coming to Verizon on November 21st for $200, pre-orders begin today

It's not much of a secret at this point, but HTC and Verizon have finally made their king-sized smartphone official at today's press event: the Droid DNA, which is essentially Big Red's variant of the J Butterfly released in Japan a few weeks ago, will be offered in stores and online starting the day before Thanksgiving for $200 with a two-year commitment, but early adopters will be able to pre-order their unit today.

As you may recall, the DNA is already well known in mobile circles thanks to its 5-inch 1080p Super LCD3 display (which comes out to 440ppi), but there's plenty of other goodies that make this particular handset a rather tempting purchase for the holiday season. For instance, it's helped along by a 1.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor (APQ8064 paired with MDM9615m, to be specific) and 2GB of RAM, and will come running Jelly Bean and HTC's Sense 4+ UI. It will also come with an 8MP f/2.0 rear camera with 28mm wide angle lens, BSI sensor, ImageChip and 1080p HD video capture. On the opposite side of the phone you can expect to see a 2.1MP f/2.0 front-facing cam that features 1080p HD video record and an 88-degree ultra-wide angle lens. By the way, all of these spiffy specs will rely on an embedded 2,020mAh battery for its power supply, but it'll have Qi-compatible wireless charging to help out when it's getting low.

HTC continues to highlight its audio prowess, as the DNA takes advantage of Beats Audio and a 2.55v built-in headset amplifier and dedicated rear speaker amp, which is geared to offer minimal distortion at maximum volume; in terms of how much multimedia you can throw on the phone, however, it comes with 16GB internal storage and no microSD slot. Rounding out the spec sheet, the DNA offers Verizon LTE, quad-band GSM and UMTS (we haven't been told if global roaming will be enabled, but we suspect so), Bluetooth 4.0 with aptX support, NFC, MHL, dual mics for noise cancelation and WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n (dual-band). It measures 9.73mm thick and weighs 4.86 ounces (138g). We'll update our post with Verizon's press release as soon as it's available, and our team is at this morning's event getting ready to have some quality hands-on time with the new beaut. In the meantime, you may want to think about revising your Black Friday shopping list.

AT&T to start selling the ASUS VivoTab RT on November 16th for $500, keyboard dock included for a limited time

We've known for some time that AT&T would sell an LTE version of ASUS' VivoTab RT tablet running Windows RT, but until today we just had the vague promise that it would arrive "in time for the holidays" (Christmas, Hanukkah, Flying Spaghetti Monster Day, take your pick). Well, now we know: AT&T just issued announced the 4G VivoTab RT will go on sale this week, on November 16th, with a list price of $500. For a limited time, at least, that price includes the keyboard dock you see pictured above. (The press release says it comes with a "Mobile dock with a keyboard and additional battery," as if they're separate pieces of hardware, but that's just some sly wording: the keyboard dock has a battery built in.)

Additionally, AT&T is running a promotion in which users get $100 off the VivoTab RT (or any other AT&T tablet) after purchasing a Windows Phone handset. If you read the fine print in the press release at the link, you'll see that AT&T is requiring a two-year agreement for both the phone and tablet. Buy the tablet unsubsidized, though, and you can add it to an existing data share plan for $10 and up per month. Either way, is it worth the added data fees? We'll leave that to you, but we would suggest you pay particular attention to the software section of our review: this thing was awfully buggy when we tested it.

Jelly Bean 4.2 SDK now available for download

Jelly Bean

Fire up the old SDK manager, as you've got a new version to download!

The Android team has made the Android 4.2 SDK (API level 17) available for download, and it looks like there a few new goodies in there for developers to have a little fun with. The SDK (Software Development Kit) is the files and tools that application developers use to build all the great apps you see in Google Play, and getting it pushed out was certainly a priority. Here's some of the highlights:

Performance

We've worked with our partners to run Renderscript computation directly in the GPU on the Nexus 10, a first for any mobile computation platform.

New ways to engage users

Users can now place interactive lock screen widgets directly on their device lock screens, for instant access to favorite apps and content. With just a small update, you can adapt any app widget to run on the lock screen. Daydream is an interactive screensaver mode that users can encounter when their devices are charging or docked in a desk dock. You can create interactive daydreams that users display in this mode, and they can include any type of content.

New interaction and entertainment experiences

Android 4.2 introduces platform support for external displays that goes beyond mirroring. Your apps can now target unique content to any number of displays attached to an Android device.

Enhancements for international users

To help you create better apps for users in languages such as Arabic, Hebrew, and Persian, Android 4.2 includes native RTL support, including layout mirroring. With native RTL support, you can deliver the same great app experience to all of your users with minimal extra work. Android 4.2 also includes a variety of font and character optimizations for Korean, Japanese, Indic, Thai, Arabic and Hebrew writing systems.

To download the latest SDK, open the SDK manager and select the new items from the available sources. For more information about everything that's new, see the source links.
