Five iPhone 5s in five days win an iPhone 5 gift card, courtesy of Heatmaps!

You have to admit, this was a great way to start off the week, and it's just as enjoyable to finish it off this way as well. The fifth day of our five-day giveaway campaign is coming to a close, but not before we hand out one final prize to a lucky winner: a gift card good for the price of one iPhone 5 at full retail price. This comes to us courtesy of Heatma.ps, a Polish startup that created the first heat map analysis of mobile apps. Heat mapping can certainly come in handy for developers who are trying to figure out the best way to enhance their app's UI experience. So take a peek at the link above and -- while you're here -- make sure to enter this week's contests, okay?

Google Translate gets new features, makes sure you choose the right words

Google has added functionality to the web version of its Translate service, now making it even easier for us to use and understand foreign tongues. Instead of a single result, you'll be presented with a list of the most common translations, ordered and labeled by how frequently each one is used. What's more, synonyms are also displayed next to the assortment of results, but this particular feature only works when translating into English, although more languages are expected to be supported soon. We've had a quick play around with it, and suggest you head over to the Google Translate page and try out the new elements for yourself. Now, if only the website translator could make those Japanese pages a little easier to read.

Google Talk Guru answers questions via your IM app

google talk guru answersBots -- like the kind which automate IRC rooms and Google Wave -- are a good thing to know about. There are plenty of useful bots worth knowing about, too, including the Google Talk Guru.

Just add guru@googlelabs.com to your GTalk buddies, and you can start firing off questions. Lifehacker suggests that the same types of queries supported by Google SMS will work, though we didn't have any luck getting a response out of the Guru with phrases like "score detroit red wings" or "sushi R3N 1Y1."

Still, Guru does answer a good variety of questions and it works right within your favorite IM app. It's well worth adding to your friend list, especially for getting answers on the go on your mobile device of choice.

Balance is a challenging mouse-based physics game

balance
Years of computer use have taught us that the mouse cursor is "above" the windows. It doesn't push anything around; at least not without you clicking anything.

Balance takes that ingrained bit of knowledge and cancels it out. Suddenly your cursor (a blue dot) is solid - and if it touches the blue block, it pushes it around.

Your job is to use your cursor to nudge the blue block over to the orange block. You will have to push it, lift it and even flip it on its side, and then balance it. It's a very tricky game - one I wouldn't recommend tackling with a laptop trackpad.

Still, if you have a mouse and a hankering for a little physics gameplay, this is a cute little game. I like how the blue block never stops smiling, it makes me feel better about the world.

Cueboy Quest is an adorable 8-bit style physics game

cueboyquest
Yes, that's right, I said adorable. Because Cueboy Quest really is!

You play an 8-bit cowboy whose goal on each level is to get to the door (and thus to the next level), but the door is often locked. To get it to open, you must shoot at one or more targets, and those targets aren't always in your line of sight. For example, on one level the the target is a balloon which is stuck all the way at the other end of the screen. You must first nudge it free, and then watch it float up and try to shoot it before it floats clear off the screen. Your bullets are chunky pixels that have some weight - the have arcing trajectories, so you don't always hit exactly where you aim.

There's another level where you must jump on the balloon as it floats up, use it as a platform to get to the other end of the screen, and then turn to shoot it very quickly before it flies away. Each level is very short, and most of them are quite easy. And not only are the graphics 8-bit blocky, but they're large too. Simply beautiful!

Escaping the Clutches of a Cellphone Contract

Wireless carriers are putting more energy into prepaid. It's a normal evolution. As quality phones became cheaper, prepaid brands like Sprint's Boost and Virgin Mobile have been able to offer better phones -- even a selection of smartphones, including the iPhone. Those better products, along with the availability of 4G network speeds, have increased prepaid demand.

OmmWriter brings its clean, calm writing interface to Windows

ommwriter
I have a thing for full-screen text editing. I use WriteMonkey for my creative writing needs, and VIM in a full-screen PuTTY session for my Web development work. That being the case, I'm all over the monospace, dark-background, focused editing scene.

OmmWriter attempts to take that aesthetic and make it somehow more spiritual, with three picturesque backgrounds and ambient background audio tracks (there are seven of each in the paid version).

I'm of two minds about this app. On the one hand, yes, it's beautiful. But if you want music as a background to your writing, why not pick your own soundtrack with Winamp or Foobar2000 running in the background?

OmmWriter also offers three keyboard-clicking sounds, which are kind of nice. None of these features are groundbreaking, really. OmmWriter could be seen as a way to gently ease into the world of distraction-free writing -- in case something like WriteMonkey's dark background is just too oppressive for you.

After the fold you can see a video showcasing several of OmmWriter's features and creative soundscapes.

iPad 4 gets a teardown, reveals that not much has changed

The iPad 4 has been given the same teardown treatment the iPad mini received by the guys over at iFixIt. In terms of repairability, it earned the same 2 out of 10 score that the 3rd generation iPad received. Other than a new dock connector and a few minor internal differences, much of the iPad 4's design remained unchanged from its predecessor.

Users that were a little upset about purchasing the 3rd generation iPad only to have Apple release an updated model 6 months later will be glad to know that in terms of design, you aren't getting much more. Sure, you've got the Apple A6X processor replacing the A5X in the iPad 3 and the Lightning connector but outside of that, the changes are very minimal.

If you're kicking yourself because you just bought an iPad 3, we've got some welcome news: not too much has changed in the iPad 4. The most striking addition to the fourth generation is the Lightning connector. The iPad 4 also features a slightly thicker, upgraded 1.2 MP Facetime camera, and the upgraded A6X processor. Other than those differences, the iPad 4 remains the same in terms of design and repairability, earning a 2/10 on our repairability scale -- the same score as the iPad 3.

Basically, unless you really desire a speed increase and really just despise carrying two different cables for different devices, then your iPad 3 is still very much relevant. Even the battery from the iPad 3 transferred over to the newer version so battery life won't be any different. It is, of course, still glued to the casing so when it comes to DIY repair, it's still the same annoying process.

Following with what we've heard about Apple dropping Samsung for displays, the display in the iPad 4 is manufactured by LG. It may just be a coincidence at this point considering Apple typically relies on many suppliers for displays. It doesn't mean some units don't have Samsung displays in them this time around. But it's probably a change we can expect to see as of next year if not sooner.

The Lightning connector is on its own assembly and ribbon cable which should drive down the cost of replacing the dock connector once parts are readily available. The dock connector in previous generations of iPads weren't too terrible to replace but it's nice to see that it's still replaceable.
