Hello Expense is a simple, reliable expense tracker for Android

helloexpense
A good mobile application is a fine balance between simplicity and functionality. You're using it on the go, so you don't have a lot of time to sit there and fumble with the phone to figure it all out. But you also need it to be powerful enough to let you do whatever it is you're trying to get done.

Hello Expense is one mobile app that gets it right. It's an expense tracker that lets you use your Android-powered phone to quickly log the money you spend and then analyze it and see where it all went.

I recently had the chance to use it in a real-life situation - a road trip that took a few days and involved quite a few expenses. Logging each expense took seconds, and at the end of each day I could get a great overview of how much money I spent on each category so far.

Categories and tags are user-configurable; the app also sports its own number pad to make number entry easy, regardless of what keyboard you're using.

Apple iPad mini event Retina wallpaper

Apple iPad mini event Retina wallpaper

We've gotten a ton of requests for an iPad Retina wallpaper version of the October 23 iPad mini event invitation, so I whipped this one together quickly. It's not great, more Photoshop trickery, less painstaking re-building of the original like I did for the iPhone 5 event wallpaper, but it's a little more complex and I need to get the iPod reviews done, so it's all I have time for at the moment.

I'm putting it up in the iMore wallpaper forum as well, so if anyone has any others/betters, please add them in.

Meantime, tap for the full size version, save to your Camera Roll, open Settings > Brightness and Wallpaper, choose Camera Roll, tap the saved image, set and enjoy!

Check the Weather for iPhone review

Check the Weather is a great weather app for the iPhone that has an elegant, minimalist design yet offers advanced forecast details including current conditions, hazardous weather alerts, and hourly and extended forecasts. For users within the United States it also shows a live doppler weather radar map and Dark Sky powered short term precipitation forecasts.

The main screen of Check the Weather displays the current temperature, an icon that represents the current conditions, a line graph of the temperature forecast for the next 15 hours or so, and a three day forecast that includes the high, low, and icon that represents the weather conditions. At the bottom of the screen, you'll see the time of next sunrise and sunset and in icon that represents the state of the moon (full moon, half moon, crescent). All this information is displayed in a very uncluttered matter and looks clean.

If you swipe up the screen, Check the Weather will reveal a live doppler weather map. You can pinch and zoom on the map and navigate around by swiping and scrolling. The map looks great and performs great.

Just like you can swipe up to pull up the radar map, you can swipe left to view a 14-day forecast or swipe right to reveal a 16-hour forecast. The daily forecast will show the day of the week, an icon to represent the conditions, the high and low, and for the first 7 days, the chance for precipitation. The hourly forecast display the temperature, chance for perception, and an icon that represents the conditions.

The good

  • Elegant design
  • Line graph to represent forecast
  • Live doppler weather map
  • 14-day forecast (3-day forecast on main screen)
  • 16-hour forecast
  • Swipe down, left, or right to reveal the different screens of Check the Weather
  • Save unlimited locations
  • Option for 24-hour time
  • Fahrenheit and Celsius support

The bad

  • Hourly forecasts don't begin until 3 hours from the current time
  • Sometimes the radar doesn't load. Killing the app and reloading usually fixes it.

The conclusion

Check the Weather is a fantastic weather app that will appeal to both the minimalists and those who want a little extra like radars. The only radar included with Check the Weather is a live doppler, but I believe this helps contribute the uncluttered feel of the app. The folks at Cross Forward Consulting did a fabulous job at creating a beautiful, clean, and informative weather app for the iPhone.

Windows Home Server 2011 released to manufacturers

windows home server 2011 whs
Just a little under two months after its release candidate went live, Windows Home Server (WHS) 2011 has been finalized and released into the wild. The new version of Microsoft's slick, do-it-all server OS is a big step forward from its predecessor.

Built on the Windows Server 2008 R2 base, Home Server 2011 features a simpler dashboard, a better backup solution, dead simple remote access to your home computers, and Silverlight-powered remote media streaming. For a more detailed look at what's new in Windows Home Server 2011, you check out Microsoft's official breakdown.

Drive Extender, of course, didn't resurface for the final release of WHS 2011 and that's something a lot of power users are still pretty irked about. Even without Extender, Windows Home Server offers a boatload of useful functionality and might be a good fit for your home network. Manufacturers have already begun building hardware, so you should be able to pick up a device in the very near future.

An evaluation download for Windows Home Server 2011 will be made available in April -- we'll let you know when the links are ready.

Konstruct for iOS creates generative augmented reality art with your voice

Konstruct generative augmented reality art for iOS
If you have an artistic temperament, but you weren't blessed with steady hands or an eye for color, Konstruct might be the app for you. Not only does the iPhone app let you produce generative art using words, warbles and whistles, but it also uses augmented reality to bring your artistic creation to life.

To get started, you first need to print out the Konstruct marker and place it wherever you'd like to create your AR sculpture -- it could be on your living room wall, or on the floor of your bathroom, it doesn't matter. Open the app, point your iPhone at the marker, and start making some noises! Once you're done, you can save your creation, or simply wipe the slate clean and start again.

The volume of your voice affects the size of the shapes that are drawn on the screen, and you can move your head around to alter the path of your 'brush' -- but to change the shape of your brush or modify the color palette you have to use a menu. Without knowledge of the app's internal workings, it's hard to say what the actual difference between whistling, talking and singing is -- and judging by the developer's affinity for whistling in the demo video (after the break), the app probably doesn't perform that much analysis on your input.

Still, Konstruct is just a prototype! A later version could do away with menus and rely entirely on the location, tonality, quality and amplitude of your voice -- and judging by the the words of the developer, James Alliban, there is definitely more in store for Konstruct: "The idea of transforming entire cities into user generated virtual art galleries really appeals to me. I see Konstruct as an early prototype that will hopefully be realised in this form in the future."

Download Konstruct for free from the App Store (iPhone 3GS and 4 only)

A123 Systems becomes America's latest EV battery maker to file for bankruptcy

Having been riddled with setbacks, including a major recall of faulty batteries supplied to Fisker Automotive, Michigan's favorite EV battery maker A123 Systems has filed for bankruptcy. It has also announced the sale of its main business units to rival Johnson Controls in a deal pegged at $125 million -- a sad fraction of the billion dollars it raised since it launched in 2001 (not least from government grants). It seems that neither fresh lithium ion innovations nor a potential deal with Chinese investors were able to keep the company out of the red, which leaves A123 on the road to nowhere -- right behind that other DoE-sponsored hopeful, Ener1.
