PadFone 2 surfaces in video, ASUS CEO gives viewers a brief tour (video) (update: leaked press shots)

A launch event invitation has already given us a glimpse of the ASUS PadFone 2, but Bloomberg TV India caught up with the firm's CEO Jerry Shen and snagged a video tour of the device before its October 16th reveal. The second iteration of the PadFone packs a 4.7-inch HD (presumably 720p) screen and 13-megapixel camera, which jives with specs on supposedly leaked packaging. Rather than having to fuss with a cover flap to slide the smartphone into its tablet shell, users will be able to dock the device straight into a lighter and thinner slate component. Other details are scarce, but we're sure to find out more when the curtain is ceremoniously pulled back next Tuesday. In the meantime, you can forge past the break to see footage of the hybrid starting at the 1:40 mark.

Update: The ever-prolific evleaks has just tweeted out a glamour shot of the PadFone 2 and its accompanying tablet dock.

Update 2: Evleaks has tweeted additional pictures which we've collected in the gallery below for your perusal.

What If Batman Used Apple Maps? [Video]

Here's an Apple Maps parody that's absolutely hilarious: what if Batman used Apple Maps in The Dark Knight to find Rachel Dawes? Yeah, that wouldn't have been good. Siri would have sent Batman down wrong turns, parking lots and malls just to see everything get blown up. More »

Researchers turn to 19th century math for wireless data center breakthrough

Researchers turn to 19th century math for wireless data center breakthrough

Researchers from Microsoft and Cornell University want to remove the tangles of cables from data centers. It's no small feat. With thousands of machines that need every bit of bandwidth available WiFi certainly isn't an option. To solve the issue, scientists are turning to two sources: the cutting edge of 60GHz networking and the 19th century mathematical theories of Arthur Cayley. Cayley's 1889 paper, On the Theory of Groups, was used to guide their method for connecting servers in the most efficient and fault tolerant way possible. The findings will be presented in a paper later this month, but it won't be clear how effectively this research can be applied to an actual data center until someone funds a prototype. The proposed Cayley data centers would rely on cylindrical server racks that have transceivers both inside and outside the tubes of machines, allowing them to pass data both among and between racks with (hopefully) minimal interference. Since the new design would do away with traditional network switches and cables, researchers believe they may eventually cost less than current designs and will draw less power. And will do so while still streaming data at 10 gigabits per second -- far faster than WiGig, which also makes use of 60GHz spectrum. To read the paper in its entirety check out the source.

Apple iPad mini event indeed likely to be held Tuesday, October 23

Apple iPad mini event indeed likely to be held Tuesday, October 23

Apple looks set to unveil their long-rumored, eagerly anticipated new iPad mini at a special media event just over two weeks from now. According to John Paczkowski of All Things D, however, it'll be the Tuesday, October 23 rather than the traditional Wednesday.

People familiar with Apple?s plans tell us that the company will unveil the so-called ?iPad mini? on Oct. 23 at an invitation-only event. [...] Sources declined to specify where the event is to be held, and I?ve not been able to confirm a location.

The week matches up with what I've heard, and it's really the only viable week left given that Apple had set the introduction for October. Tuesday is unusual but not unheard of, and while Paczkowski points out that it's 3 days before the expected launch of the Microsoft Surface it's also the day before Samsung's Next Big Thing event in New York City for that Wednesday (for the Galaxy Note II) .

Paczkowski also thinks the iPad mini event will likely be held at the Apple campus in Cupertino, given that Apple already held the large iPhone 5 + Music event at Yerba Buena in San Francisco.

The most interesting question remains -- how will Apple fill the keynote?

The new Macs should get some slide time, but we already saw the first Retina Mac back in June at WWDC, and some Macs don't have screens anyway. iTunes 11 was already previewed last month, so the bulk of that is done. The updated iPad 3 still makes more sense as a "by the way, we've also added a Lightning connector and international LTE to the new iPad" so no recent buyers feel jilted.

That leaves the iPad mini as the star of the show, and while it's physically amazing, it's still an iPad. What could Apple show off on it that would fill out most of a keynote?

March 31 is World Backup Day 2011

World Backup Day 2011
Those benevolent armchair philanthropist Redditors are at it again! Four days ago a 'self' post extolling the potential virtues of a Backup Day exploded with 2500 upvotes and 1000 comments -- and now World Backup Day 2011 is actually happening.

On March 31, as part of the global data-saving initiative, you are encouraged to back up all of your cherished photos and videos, and important documents. If you've ever had a hard disk fail, and not had a backup to fall back on, you'll know that it's a bit like losing a sizable fragment of your soul. If you've never backed up your important files -- or if you only back up sporadically -- do it on World Backup Day!

It's not hard to back up your data, either. A 2TB drive costs only a fistful of dollars, and it takes just a few minutes to set SyncToy for Windows, or Time Machine for Mac, to mirror your data every night. If you prefer a cloud-based solution, there's always SugarSync and Dropbox. Finally, don't forget that Bundlelytic has a charity giveaway for three excellent data-backup-and-recovery tools -- $160 of software for only $25, and 100% of the proceeds to go the Japanese Red Cross.

For even more backup options, for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux, check our list of 13 great backup programs.

Opera 11.10 includes improved power saving features

opera 11.10 battery power
Just recently, the Opera 11.10 release candidate was made available for download. It brought a handful of important feature additions -- like HTML5 File API support and IMAP enhancements -- and loads of bugfixes. Nestled in amongst the other details in the Opera team's announcement is one more interesting tidbit: Opera 11.10 offers improved battery optimizations.

The timing here is certainly interesting, what with Microsoft's recent report on how much power the top five Web browsers consume. In its findings, Opera 11 was fairly low in the standings. While we've not seen any new benchmarks yet, we're curious to know whether the Opera 11.10 RC offers any significant gains.

If you're running Opera 11.10 on a laptop, let us know if you're seeing an improvement in your battery life while browsing!

Cingleton deux: Day one

Cingleton duex: Day one

The second annual Cingleton Symposium -- Ç deux -- kicked off at the Nelligan Hotel in Old Montreal tonight. Organized by Guy English, Luc Vandal, Scott Morrison, and Petra Mueller, it brings together the best in iOS and OS X developers, designers, and media, mixes them up like high octane cocktail, and let's amazing things result.

Guy kicked off the event by threatening attendees, just to get them in the proper mood, then Luc, Scott, and Petra set the stage for the evening.

This year's theme is scaling, and Jason Snell, editorial director of Macworld, PC World, and Tech Hive gave the opening keynote.

He showed his skills as a Basic programmer and then drew parallels between Apple and Star Trek 2: Wrath of Khan, bookending Dan Moren's Apple as Star Wars talk from last year.

While last year's event topped out at roughly 70 attendees, this year's larger venue allows for over 100. Speakers for the rest of the event include Glenn Fleishman, Serenity Caldwell, Michael Lopp, Marco Arment, Molly Reed, Brad Ellis, Michael Jurewitz, Dan Moren, and Lex Friedman.

It's all being recorded for posterity by Thomas Unterberger, so if you missed the event, you'll be able to catch up on the talks. Last year's are available on Vimeo now.

Gmail for Android 4.2 purportedly features pinch-to-zoom, new gesture controls

Android Central

The Android 4.2 and LG Nexus rumors keep on coming, as this morning we're hearing reports of what could be in the next version of Gmail for Android. According to Android Police, which claims to have obtained the new version of Gmail from an LG Nexus system dump, we'll be able to look forward to some long-awaited features in Gmail for Android 4.2.

First up, the site claims we'll finally be getting pinch-to-zoom in messages, a feature long absent from Gmail, and much requested by Android users. This should hopefully make large HTML-based emails a little easier to handle on mobile. Other reported changes include the ability to swipe messages away to delete or archive them, just like in the notification shade. And finally, there's now the ability to report phishing directly from within the app. Not huge changes, but we're sure many Gmail users will be pleased to see pinch-to-zoom finally arrive after all this time.

It's also interesting that this new version of Gmail is marked as 4.2. Typically when a major new version of Android ships, Google apps are updated to bring them in line with the new OS software version. This would match what we've heard from our own sources, that the next Nexus smartphone is currently being tested with Android 4.2, rather than the older 4.1.2 seen in leaked photos.

Not long now, folks. The LG Nexus, which has leaked in various forms over the past week, is reported to make its  official debut towards the end of the month.
