Protect your financial life with the #FellowesInc Powershred 73Ci small office or home office shredder

This post brought to you by Fellowes. All opinions are 100% mine. Last year, I was lucky enough to review the Fellowes Powershred 79Ci shredder.  I needed something to shred all those pre-approved credit card offers, receipts, bills, and other financial papers.  Other shredders I had tried were always jamming; it just seemed easier to [...]

Big Plans For CrunchBase

pera2CrunchBase has grown like a tree planted in a quiet corner of the yard and left to do its thing. Six years in, our free and editable industry database gets 1.5 million unique visitors a month and has had 90,000 users create 105,000 companies and 140,000 individual profiles. It’s proven to be one of the most successful products that TechCrunch has launched over the years. Now it’s time to think about the future. We are committing a significant amount of money to expanding the product and the team behind it. You’ll be hearing a lot more in the coming months, but here’s what we can share now. The team of long-time staffers and experienced additions – Matt Kaufman, Gené McPherson, Vineet Thanedar, Anthony Nguyen, and Kurt Freytag – now has a blog. And on that blog, they’ve begun showcasing top developers from among the thousands using the CrunchBase API. Big data analytics startup SiSense has kicked things off today with a post about how it’s pulled in data to provide an investment dashboard and data visualizations. Investors and entrepreneurs using the product can learn important market information like the average time between startup funding rounds year over year. The CB team is going to be regularly featuring guest posts from any developer who has done something smart and useful with the data, provided that: Your application is publicly accessible Your application attributes CrunchBase according to the CrunchBase API TOS Your application directs users to CrunchBase to update missing or out-dated information As an added bonus, TechCrunch writers who are interested in analyzing data to break stories are going to be taking a hard look at these tools and potentially incorporating them into how we work. We’ll also be interested in writing about them. You can apply for the Developer Spotlight Program by sending them an email. The team itself is growing, too. If you join, you’ll get to work in our historic SOMA office alongside our editorial, product and business teams, right down the street from Caltrain, The Creamery, Giants Stadium, and thousands of tech companies large and small. You will be on the pulse of the Valley, developing a beloved product that plays a key role in keeping our industry up to date. Check out the hiring details here.

MOO rolls its own tagging app, but NFC business cards still MIA

MOO NFC

MOO's NFC-enabled business cards still aren't available to the public just yet (we've got a tester version we like to flash around at parties and such), but the company today gave word that it's rolled its own NFC-tagging app.

The interface is simple enough. You can link to a web site, map, social networks, phone numbers and vCards, as well as read and reset what's on your MOO NFC card.

Now we just need some cards to tech up our wallets, and we're good to go.

Moo's NFC tagging app hits Google Play, NFC business card not required

Moocom releases NFC management app on Google Play, no fancy NFC business card required

Remember those NFC-equipped business cards Moo promised? Yeah, well, they're still not ready for mass consumption. But, that's not stopping the company from making its own NFC tagging app available today on Google Play. Obviously, the intended draw here is to pair the companion app with Moo's fancy programmable cards. In lieu of that, however, you can always use the company's software with other NFC tags in your possession to transfer social networking data, phone numbers, contact info and even redirect to specified URLs. The only barrier to entry? You'll need a handset running Android ICS and up (and, ideally, an actual NFC business card). Head to the source below to demo the free application now.

Firefox 4 Friday: 25 million downloads, anti-aliasing, and how to make it look like Firefox 3

Firefox 4 racks up 25 million downloads in 3 days
If you've had your head under a rock for the last few days, here's this week's Firefox news in brief: Firefox 4 was finally released.

Yes, 13 months after the initial release of Firefox 3.7 alpha 1 and four more alpha builds, a renumbering to 4.0 and 12 beta releases, and finally a release candidate (or two), Firefox 4 has been released into the wild.

Just like every other Firefox release, initial reception for the new browser has been nothing short of insane. 7.1 million downloads were registered in the first 24 hours and the download rate continued to accelerate, clocking in more than 15 million downloads after two days. At the time of writing, three days in, Firefox 4 has been downloaded over 25 million times. In case you're wondering, the United States accounts for 7 million of those downloads, just beating out Germany's Firefox-downloads-per-capita.

But now that you've installed Firefox 4 (you have, right?), what do you do now? Well, obviously, in true Download Squad fashion, it's time to tweak Firefox 4 using add-ons and about:config hacks!

First up is an add-on called Stratiform that lets you change every aspect of the Firefox 4 browser chrome -- including the color of that orange button!

These Ear Plugs Are Your Peace-And-Quiet Deal of the Day

While headphones can effectively block out sound - especially if you're pumping some loud music through them - sometimes you don't want loud music in your ears. You want silence, or, at the very least, reduced cacophony. That's why you need a nice pair of earplugs, instead of those disposable yellow sponges that never quite fit right. Bossman Joe Brown agrees—he wouldn't have survived running the Gizmodo ship at CES without a nice pair of V-Moda Fader earplugs. Usually these V-Modas are $20, but Amazon just dropped the price to $15. A pittance for a little bit of peace and quiet. [Amazon] More »

Windows 8 to feature adaptive Aero colorization, get it now on Windows 7

windows 8 aero colorization aura
While we've still yet to see anything truly Earth-shattering, the tandem of Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott continues to churn out insight about interesting new features they've discovered in Windows 8 milestone 3. The latest discovery is that Aero in Windows 8 will be able to automatically adapt itself to match your current wallpaper image. It's a bit like what Windows 7 already does with your taskbar icons: if a program alert needs your attention, the icon will glow using the predominant color (e.g. Firefox should glow orange).

And yes, you can already make Windows 7 behave this way if you like. Over at CodePlex, there's a little program called Aura that parks itself in your system tray and automatically adjusts your window borders to compliment your wallpaper images. The effect is quite nice, and you can try it out by minimizing your windows and cycling through your theme's wallpapers (right click on your desktop and choose next desktop background).

Wunderlist 2 task manager app hits the iPad

Wunderlist 2 task manager app hits the iPad

6Wunderkinder's Wunderlist 2 has been developing something of a following among the highly organized, although there's been a conspicuous gap when iPad owners couldn't keep up with the to-dos and reminders they'd created on their phones. The hole is closing quickly: Wunderlist 2's iOS version is now a universal app that supports all flavors of iPads. There won't be any surprises in features if you had a peek at the app on an Android tablet last week, but consistency is more of a virtue than a vice when juggling tasks. Interlocked is a three-dimensional brain teaser

interlocked
Back when I was a kid, I used to love crafting ornate puzzle boxes out of Lego. There would be just one way to open the box, by carefully shifting and rotating a bunch of pieces. Well, either that, or breaking the box in frustration.

Interlocked takes that spirit and turns it into a beautiful Flash game. It's a good thing the soundtrack is soothing, because the game itself can get pretty frustrating.

At the start of each level, you're presented with a box built out of blocks in different colors. You can click and drag the mouse to rotate the box any which way. Once you decide you want to shift a part of the box, hit SPACE to switch into "move" mode. You can then click any part of the box and drag it. Of course, you can only move a part as long as nothing is in its way. So it becomes a matter of understanding how the box is built, and what parts you need to move around so you could eventually take the box apart.

It's a tricky, difficult game, but it's a great brain teaser -- and definitely a keeper.
