Barnes and Noble sees quarterly sales surge, losses fall to $41 million

Barnes and Noble sees sales surge, losses fall as quarter ends in profit

Barnes & Noble has had a quarter worth remembering, bringing in $1.5 billion and reducing its losses to $41 million -- down from $57 million last year. Retail business was up, thanks to the closure of Borders branches and blockbuster sales of Fifty Shades of Grey, while College sales increased quarterly losses by $2 million to $14 million. While online sales fell 7.6 percent and the Nook business remained flat, the company saw digital content purchases skyrocket by 46 percent -- and the company couldn't produce enough GlowLight devices to satisfy demand. Wondering about the company's tie-up with Microsoft? There's still no news beyond that it hopes the new partnership will be up and running by the fall.

BBC not bringing iPlayer or live streaming to Windows Phone, blames Microsoft

BBC not bringing iPlayer to Windows Phone 8, blames Microsoft

Microsoft is getting brickbats from developers unenthused by its forthcoming operating system(s), and the BBC is the latest to join the chorus. When asked about bringing iPlayer to Windows Phone, the corporation's on-demand honcho, Daniel Danker, responded by saying it's not cost-or-time effective for the system -- thanks to a lack of support for HTTP Live Streaming. Mr. Danker confirmed to us that HLS is not the proprietary format it's believed to be, used on a wide variety of devices including Smart TVs and consoles -- but is not included in Redmond's mobile OS.

Live streaming is also impossible thanks to a "bug" in the software that can't secure the session, breaking the corporation's copy protection system which only affects mobile devices. Redmond's known of the problem for some time, and is working on a solution, but has yet to make any official announcement otherwise. He told us that he's optimistic that a solution might arrive, perhaps on October 26th, but until then, the corporation won't even look at developing an app for any Windows-powered handset. After the break we've included the full text of the original email if you'd like to hear it from the source.

Thousands of iPad Apps Is that All it Has to Offer?

The mad rush to get hold of an iPad certainly led a lot of people to believe that this nifty little gadget would put a smart phone to shame. The fact that users would be able to get thousands of apps on their iPad might have had something to do with craze and Apple did make it one of the selling points about the device. Editorial: Cutting the cable cord is a young trend going in the right direction

Editorial Cutting the cable cord is a young trend going in the right direction

This week I bought a Roku. Late to the party? Yes, but not as late as you might suppose. Roku has sold about 2.5 million streaming media boxes since the product launched in 2008. Approximately 1.5 million of those units moved in 2011, indicating an acceleration of demand. Coincidentally, those numbers roughly represent the cord-cutting movement: Reportedly, 2.65 million cable subscribers ditched their service between 2008 and 2011, with about 1.5 million of those defections happening in 2011.

While cable cord-cutting is a trend, the movement is occurring in the context of customer inertia. About 100 million customers subscribe to cable, satellite, and other pay-TV providers (e.g. AT&T's U-Verse). The problematic value proposition of cutting the cord will probably keep massive inaction in place for the short term, but cannot, I believe, withstand long-term marketplace demands.

The Zaphat Can Turn You Into A Zombie?Sorta

zaphatHere's an interesting approach to Augmented Reality marketing: turn hats into Zombie heads. The Zaphat (pronounced like Zap Hat, not Zafat) is a new line of fashion apparel where the logo on the accoutrement acts as the target for an iOS/Android app that uses Augmented Reality to transform the wearer into an avatar of their choice. In other words, when you wear a special hat, people can look at you with an app and see a Zombie instead of your head and then take a picture of you.

Internet Explorer 9 nears 4% share on Windows 7, IE6 extinction countdown picks up steam

internet explorer 9 ie9
Microsoft has shared some news about the state of its most and least loved Web browsers -- Internet Explorer 9 and 6, respectively. Even with IE9 only recently exiting beta, Microsoft reports that 3.6% of Windows 7 users are now running the new browser (no mention of Vista... what's with that?). The post also reveals that the adoption rate is almost five times what IE8 garnered in the early going.

It's also interesting to note that there are now more than 1,000 sites utilizing Internet Explorer 9's Windows 7 integration features -- like the new desktop notification support we showed you in Hotmail.

But perhaps the best news of all is that Microsoft's IE6countdown.com now has more than 400 partners and is generating nearly two million pageviews per month, helping to lure users away from the woefully out-of-date browser. Can the end come soon enough, DS readers?

Best apps to follow NFL football on iPhone

Best iPhone apps to follow this year's football season

Football season is upon us again and with it comes the need for NFL score updates, player stats, rosters, and other information hardcore fans want in the palm of their hands. For iPhone users, you've got tons of options when it comes to apps. Whether you just want to check score updates or check on your favorite fantasy football league. Follow along for our top picks.

ESPN ScoreCenter

ScoreCenter is by far one of the most popular sports apps in the App Store. Not only does it contain support for NFL but other sports as well. You can follow your favorite teams and choose to receive push notifications for a variety of different things. You can set alerts for individual games or for a whole season which is nice for people who may not want updates for games they're able to watch. They can just set them for games they know they're going to miss.

I like the fact that ScoreCenter allows you to follow all your teams and see a brief summary in one place. If you just want to check scores and stats quickly you won't have to dig around. But you have the option to see more detailed information if you want to.

ScoreCenter is a free download in the App Store.

ESPN Fantasy Football 2012

For those of you that take part in fantasy football leagues, ESPN also offers an app for fantasy leagues as well. You'll need to already have a fantasy league to use this app but once you have one, you can use the app to manage your league, including the ability to start, bench, add, or drop players, accept or reject trades, receive push notifications for scores, substitutions, and trades.

ESPN Fantasy Football 2012 also allows you to view fantasy league news and is a free download in the App Store.

Pro Football Insider

If you want to view more than just stats, scores, rosters, and rankings - you may prefer Pro Football Insider. It contains not only the information you'd expect but thousands of video clips, updated news and rumors, and even more.

One thing I really found interesting about this app over the others was the integrated Twitter feed which aggregates Twitter postings from not only industry experts but players themselves.

If you're a Pro Football Insider subscriber you'll also have access to even more premium content that the free app doesn't provide. This is an app any hardcore football fan will want to pick up.

NFL '12

While I didn't find NFL '12 to be as in depth as some of the other picks, the ease of use and simple to navigate interface makes up for it. If you need an app that will give you up-to-date game information along with player stats, rosters, and statistics - NFL '12 should suit you well.

You can customize alerts for teams and games just as you can in some of the other popular apps such as ESPN ScoreCenter. NFL '12 also offers integration with their NFL.com Fantasy Football 2012 (App Store link) service and app. Most fantasy football fans I talked to seemed to prefer the ESPN fantasy app better, but if you prefer the NFL fantasy app, this pairing may be a better option for you.

NFL Fantasy Cheat Sheet 2012

Here's another app fantasy football leaguers will definitely want to check out. Not only does it aggregate up to date NFL news, standings, and charts - it's one of the better apps out there for managing your fantasy leagues.

Out of the apps I checked out for fantasy football fans, this app seemed to have the best user interface by far. You can quickly view profiles and stats by simply swiping left and right. Other apps sometimes left stats buried and harder to get to. This app is put together exceptionally well and will make managing your content easier than ever.

Some of the main features of the app include the ability to view custom rankings based on your league scoring system, 2012 projections and stats based on data from 2007 - 2011, team depth charts, rank players manually, draft player tracking and more.

Your favorite football apps?

While these may be some of our favorite apps to load up on our iPhones during football season, it doesn't mean there aren't other great ones out there. If you use something different let us know what your picks are as well.

And if you want even more suggestions on football or NFL apps, check out our iMore apps & games forum for more opinions from forum members. You can also give us your opinions on your favorite sports apps in our iMore apps & games review forum. We'd love to hear from you!
