If you're hot and bothered by the Galaxy S III on Verizon and have a burning desire to get your grubby little mitts on some custom ROMs and kernels, then rejoice, because you'll no longer have to plunk down $600 on the Developer Edition to partake in the fun. That's right, the encrypted bootloader of Big Red's Galaxy S III has now been unlocked. If you're wanting to partake in the fun, you'll find the requisite utility and a complete list of instructions over at xda-developers. As is, you'll need either Linux or OS X to carry out the dirty work, though workarounds for Windows users are possible. Be sure to do a bit of soul-searching before pulling the trigger, however, as any future updates pose the risk of bricking your device. That said, if you dive straight into the world of custom ROMs, it'll be much less of an issue.
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]Update: Hit the break for a video that shows the process of unlocking the bootloader on Verizon's Galaxy S III.

Mobile payments make strange bedfellows, so it's perhaps not all that surprising that a group of high profile retailers have teamed up to bring the world the Merchant Customer Exchange (MCX). The list includes such biggies as Best Buy, Walmart, Target, Sears, Lowe's and Shell, among others. The venture is set to offer up a mobile-commerce app that will provide payments and deals on "virtually any smartphone." Details are still pretty scarce, though the MCX's official site promises more info on the offering soon, including further details on deals and additional company names. In the meantime, there's a press release after the break.

Pinterest finally has an official Android app. The popular social network is currently in the middle of an event where they're showing off brand new mobile apps for their platform. The network that relies on users pinning items for their friends has grown enormously in the past year, which has contributed to the impatience users have felt about an official mobile app. We got a hands-on preview of the app back at Google I/O, but there was no release date at that time.
The official app looks a lot like the website and has been done really well. You see your tiled homepage with all of your friends' pins. You can search for items to pin yourself, re-pin someone else's, like a pin, and comment on a pin as well. You can also find new friends to follow directly from the app. It's done very well and the app appears very fast in the small amount of time I've been playing with it.
Check it out for yourself at the Google Play Store link, and we've got screenshots after the break.
