TwitPic review - how the mighty have fallen

Android Central

Twitpic, one of the venerable forerunners of image sharing on Twitter, now has its own dedicated mobile app. Of course, it might seem a little extraneous since most Twitter clients have folded in Twitpic sharing as an option, or have simply opted for Twitter’s own native image service. Twitpic has been around for ages, but what else can it offer at this point?

FTC and Facebook settle privacy dispute, skip the fine

FTC and facebook settle privacy dispute

Well, Mark Zuckerberg is finally trying to make things right after admitting to a "bunch of mistakes" when dealing with user privacy on his juggernaut of a social network. The FTC and Facebook had agreed to settle the dispute in November, and now the final details of the deal have been ironed out. Noticeably missing from the list of concessions is cash. The government isn't asking Facebook to cough up any dough as part of the settlement -- avoiding the sort of hefty fine that Google recently found itself on the wrong end of. The company will, however, have drastically revamp how it handles user data and subject itself to privacy audits every two years for 20 years. Customers will now be provided with "clear and prominent" warnings any time information is shared. And, before anything can be shared, users must give express consent to for that information to be distributed. Ideally, these measures would have been in place on day one, but we'll take what we can get at this point. For more details, check out the FTC's press release after the break.

IE9 and Firefox 4 post top marks in Web browser power use comparison

Over on the Internet Explorer Blog, Microsoft has posted results from an extensive comparison of the top five Web browsers. The goal: to determine whether Internet Explorer 9, Firefox 4, Chrome 10, Safari 5, or Opera 11 is able to squeeze the most life out of your laptop's battery.

A baseline was determined with test systems sitting idle, and then browsers were pointed at about:blank, a news site, the HTML5 Galactic demo, and the IE9 fish tank demo. Perhaps unsurprisingly, IE9 came out on top -- though Firefox 4 was a very close second on nearly every test. As you can see, the other browsers didn't necessarily fare quite as well, with Google Chrome, Safari, and Opera all posting significantly worse scores. In Opera 11's case, a laptop battery would last over one hour more with Internet Explorer 9 installed.

But what we'd really like to know is where did Microsoft find the dilithium crystals required to run a Galactic Total Power Consumption test...

Eurocom intros powerhouse Scorpius laptop, touts more video memory than most desktops

Eurocom has carved out a strange but soft spot in our hearts for its desktop replacement-level laptops -- the insistence on overkill hardware leaves even the vaguely ultraportable Monster packing the kind of power reserved for larger-screened (if also much thinner) counterparts. Nowhere is that too-much-is-never-enough attitude truer than in the just-launched, 17.3-inch Scorpius. While supporting up to 32GB of RAM isn't unique anymore, the Scorpius can optionally carry two of NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 680M graphics chips with the full 4GB of video RAM per piece. That's more graphics memory than the total system memory of some entire PCs, folks. Eurocom can optionally slot in two of AMD's Radeon HD 7970M or step down to a single graphics core, and the usual bevy of processor and storage choices culminates in as much as a quad 2.9GHz Core i7 and four drives. The lowest price that will net a fully functioning Scorpius is $1,793, although we'll admit that it's very tempting to pick that dual 680M option and come out with a $2,857 bill -- not to mention some serious bragging rights with the gamer crowd.

Save your tabs and Panorama tab groups in Firefox 4

Firefox 4 save tabs
When Firefox 4's tab grouping tool, Panorama, had its keyboard shortcut changed to the finger-breaking combo of Ctrl+Shift+E, we thought Panorama would get dropped before FF4's final release -- but, thankfully, it made the cut!

If you've used Firefox 4 and Panorama, you might have noticed that Mozilla's new browser doesn't always save your tab groupings when you close the browser -- a bit of a pain, if you spend a long time setting up the perfect groups! This is tied into the removal of the 'Save and Quit' dialog box -- and enabling Panorama tab group saving is just a matter of re-enabling the Save and Quit dialog.

Open a new tab and head to about:config. Click through the warning and type 'quit' into the filter box. Double click browser.showQuitWarning to change its value to true (see image after the break). That's it -- now you'll have the option of saving your tabs, and thus tab groups, when you close Firefox.

WordPress for iPhone and iPad gets better interface, becomes far more useful

WordPress for iPhone and iPad has received an update that is sure to make bloggers happy. Now it includes a sidebar for quick navigation, support for Post Formats, a new WordPress.com Friend Finder, landscape support, access to your Dashboard, and more.

The new sidebar allows quick access to all your WordPress blogs including Posts, Pages, Comments, Stats, and even your Dashboard. Viewing your Dashboard is through an in-app browser, so it's not the greatest experience, but it's convenient to have it available for those time that the in-app features aren't quite enough.

In addition to all the new features of WordPress, it has also received an entirely new look. The colors and graphics have all been updated and look great.

I've been a longtime WordPress user and am so far impressed with this update. In the past, I used the WordPress iPhone and iPad as a way to get content up on the go, but never really enjoyed the experience. Now, if I am relaxing on the couch with my iPhone and iPad, I may just use one of my iOS devices even though my laptop and desktop are easily accessible.

Anyone given the newly updated WordPress app a whirl yet? If so, how are you liking it? How useful is it to your blogging?

Curiosity Begins Capturing Martian Kodak Moments

Following the most complex landing ever attempted on Mars, NASA's most advanced Mars rover to date landed on the Red Planet at 10:32 p.m. PDT on Sunday. Dubbed "Curiosity," the one-ton, car-sized rover had been in flight for 36 weeks. Its complicated touchdown settled the device near the foot of a mountain three miles tall and 96 miles in diameter inside the Red Planet's Gale Crater.

Google gives mobile search a makeover for quick-answer queries

DNP Google gives mobile search a makeover for quickanswer queries

If you're looking for flight times, currency conversions, word definitions and more, you'll notice that Google has dressed up the responses in new, Now card type clothing. On top of being prettier, the look is designed to make the data easier to parse and also adds an interactive element -- letting you change a distance or unit when doing metric conversions, for example. Currently the refresh is limited to smartphone and tablet searches, but Google has promised to roll it out soon to desktop searches and international users. The change is part of an ever-evolving list of tweaks and updates to Mountain View's venerable search engine -- check the source for more info.
