NVIDIA Q2 earnings bounce back through Tegra: $119 million profit on $1.04 billion in revenue

NVIDIA logo

NVIDIA's fiscal performance in its second quarter shows the rewards of patience in the mobile sphere. It just saw its profit double versus a glum first quarter to $119 million, even though the company only slightly edged ahead in revenue to $1.04 billion. In explaining the success, the company is quick to point to a confluence of events that all worked in favor of its bank account: a slew of Tegra 3 phones and tablets like the Transformer Pad TF300 made NVIDIA's quarter the brightest, but it could also point to a much-expanded GeForce 600 line on the PC side and the shipments of the first phones with NVIDIA-badged Icera chips. The graphics guru expects its revenue to climb more sharply in the heat of the third quarter as well -- between the cult hit Nexus 7 tablet and a role as a major partner for Windows RT, NVIDIA has at least a temporary license to print money.

Doodle friday: End your week with a penalty shootout

Doodle friday: End your week with a penalty shootout

Relive the nail-biting insanity and inherent unfairness of soccer's penalty shootout over at Google right now, as you try to match our first-attempt score of 18 points and two gold stars. (We'll update this post as soon as an Engadget editor gets a result we can be proud of.) It's a ballistic way to end a run of Doodles that has already involved canoeing, hoops, hurdles and all-round Olympic work avoidance. Post your scores here at your own risk.

Update: Did we say 18? We meant 81, but forgot to take a grab, so officially we'll have to make do with a top score of 34.

Sony Xperia GX now available in Japan on NTT Docomo

Android Central

Right on schedule, Sony's new flagship smartphone, the Xperia GX, has today launched on NTT Docomo in Japan. The slim-line device is the spiritual successor to last year's Xperia Arc, and it comes with a spec list that should tantalize Android fans after a relatively tepid early 2012 showing from Sony.

The GX boasts a 4.6-inch 720p Sony HD Reality Display, a dual-core Snapdragon S4 CPU at 1.5GHz, 1GB of RAM, a 13MP rear camera (based on Sony's new CMOS sensor for smartphones). On the software side, there's Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich, backed up by Sony's UXP NXT software, and all the proprietary Sony Entertainment Network and PlayStation functionality you'd expect. Android purists will be pleased to hear that the GX sports on-screen buttons, including a dedicated multitasking key.

If you're in Japan, you can view pricing details and other info at the source link below. If not, you'll have to wait until later this month, where Sony's expected to unveil an international version of the GX at its IFA press conference in Berlin.

In-app payment support arrives on Android

Right on cue, Google has launched in-app payment support for Android applications. Developer testing began last week, and now many popular apps -- like the ones pictured above -- can begin charging users for add-on functionality, content, or whatever the heck else they feel is worthy of additional bits of your pocket change. If you were wondering, Google will take the same 30% cut that Apple takes from in-app purchases.

At last we can buy individual issues in Comics with minimal fuss!
