Ask DLS: What's your favorite mobile app at the moment?

askdls
The mobile app marketplace is exploding; there are now hundreds of thousands of apps on the iOS, Android and BlackBerry app markets. Heck, even Windows Phone 7 just crossed the 10,000 mark!

But alas, not all apps are created equal; some are way, way better than others. Which leads me to today's Ask DLS question: What is your favorite mobile app at the moment?

We don't necessarily mean the latest craze; we'd like to hear about apps that have stood the test of time on your device, apps that are among the first you install on a new smartphones, apps that have earned their place on your home screen and in your heart.

So, what are some of these apps? Bonus points for links to screenshots in the comments!

Transforming Lamp Morphs Into a Table For Emergency Cocktail Parties [Wish You Were Here]

How many times have you been embarrassingly caught off guard when a cocktail party suddenly appears in your living room and there's no place for guests to put their drinks? It's a horrifying thought, but thankfully there are industrial design students like Christina Sicoli who are creating solutions to the problem. More »

Google TV Needs To Decide: Platform Or Closed Ecosystem

andy2There is no debating that consumer adoption of Google TV is extremely disappointing. Logitech has dropped out of the business, several online publications including this one have declared the platform dead. While some new OEMs like Vizio, Sony, and LG have launched new devices with Google TV, it?s not clear that any meaningful customer adoption will come as a result of these deals. I believe there is one big reason it hasn?t taken off. It?s that Google TV is straddling a dual-strategic approach when it needs to pick one strategy and double down on it.

TweetDeck to launch as HTML5 Web app, now accepting beta testers

When TweetDeck landed in the Chrome Web Store, it seemed like an indication that it might eventually evolve into a pure HTML5 Web app. Now it looks as though that's exactly what's going to happen, with TweetDeck announcing that a new, not-just-for-Chrome Web client is ready for beta testing.

It's a natural progression for TweetDeck, especially since its originally Adobe Air app is practically all Web code. TweetDeck Web will sport a feature set which is nearly identical to the Chrome app, with the notable exception of Twitter streaming.

Initially, TweetDeck is targeting Firefox 4 and 3.6, Google Chrome, and Safari. Opera and Internet Explorer 9 won't be invited to the dance until a bit later on.

If you'd like to get in on the TweetDeck Web beta, head on over and register -- or sign up using your existing TweetDeck account.

Farragomate is a social fridge magnet game where you make up sentences

farragomate
You know those fridge magnet kits composed of a whole bunch of words? The ones you put all over your fridge door and then try to arrange into all sorts of juvenile and/or amusing sentences. Well, Farragomate is the social, webby version of that very same pastime.

You get to play with a bunch of random strangers in real-time, and make up sentences out of a pre-set collection of words, including some fairly naughty ones, and all players' nicknames. As you can imagine, some of the results are not child-friendly.

There are ten rounds to a game. Once a round is done, players get to vote for their favorite sentence from that round. You can't vote for your own creation, of course. There's in-game chat, too.

I think the vocabulary could be made a bit more eclectic, but even as it is, it's a nice way to spend a few minutes and meet random strangers on the Internet (always a thrilling experience).

Sony Xperia 'LT30' details teased by Bluetooth SIG

Android Central

Since the arrival of the Xperia S in February, we haven't heard much in the way of high-end international phones from Sony. It looks like that might change in the near future, however, as today a new Sony device has cropped up in a  Bluetooth Special Interest Group  product listing, revealing a few tantalizing details.

The Bluetooth SIG product description indicates that the Sony "LT30" is "part of the premium product line", featuring "an attractive 'ARC' design with metal back cover." That certainly sounds a lot like the Xperia GX, which will be launching on Japan's NTT Docomo this month. Other details include a fairly complete list of specs -- a 4.6-inch 720p Bravia Engine screen, 1080p video recording, MHL capability, a 13MP rear camera and 720o-supporting front-facer. Approximate dimensions also place it in the same ballpark as the Xperia GX, as it apparently measures roughly 68 x129 x 9 mm and weighs 140 grams.

There's no indication as to where this product will end up appearing, but the lack of any suffix after LT30 (for example, i for international or a for Americas) suggest this thing may see release in multiple territories. Rumors also suggest that the LT30 is the same phone as the purported "Mint" codenamed device that first showed up in a leaked roadmap back in January. If that's the case, it'll likely be a high-end device with a ~€550 price tag.

Nintendo debuts new 3DS variants in spicy summer colors

While we're still itching to handle its bigger (and more stylish) XL iteration, that hasn't stopped Nintendo rolling out the acid colors for two Asia-bound handhelds. The 3DS in Cerulean (the bright blue one) and Shimmer (the hot pink version) will hit stores in Hong Kong and Taiwan, accompanying the launch of the 3DS XL in September. No word from Nintendo so far on whether it'll follow the Aubergine-hued model to the US .
