Opera 11.10 includes improved power saving features

opera 11.10 battery power
Just recently, the Opera 11.10 release candidate was made available for download. It brought a handful of important feature additions -- like HTML5 File API support and IMAP enhancements -- and loads of bugfixes. Nestled in amongst the other details in the Opera team's announcement is one more interesting tidbit: Opera 11.10 offers improved battery optimizations.

The timing here is certainly interesting, what with Microsoft's recent report on how much power the top five Web browsers consume. In its findings, Opera 11 was fairly low in the standings. While we've not seen any new benchmarks yet, we're curious to know whether the Opera 11.10 RC offers any significant gains.

If you're running Opera 11.10 on a laptop, let us know if you're seeing an improvement in your battery life while browsing!

Burrito Bison is a simple game for gummy bear lovers

burritobison
Burrito Bison is a pretty simple game, but if you're into gummy bears you might find it addictive.

As you may have guessed from the name, you're a bison (not a burrito, though). In the course of your day-to-day grocery shopping, you're abducted into a bag of gummy bears, and must now fend for yourself.

At the beginning of each round you launch yourself onto the marching gummy (gummi?) bears, while you're being watched by a huge crowd of even more gummy bears. Your goal is to keep bouncing on the bears and earn more and more money while you do it. Every time you hit a gummy bear, you lose some momentum. If you hit the floor, you basically lose all of it.

But don't give up just yet! You have an emergency thrust which you can use to gain some momentum and keep bouncing on those bears. This extra thrust gets refilled as you hit more bears.

There are also special gummy bears that give you extra thrust or extra money. The money comes in handy at the end of each round, when you can shop for cool stuff to make your bison even more effective against those gummy bears.

It's a fun and colorful game that kept my interest for quite some time, and almost sent me running to the closest store to get some gummy bears!

Sony Xperia Neo L pictured - sleek entry-level ICS phone for China

Android Central

We haven't seen much of the Sony Xperia Neo L since it was first announced for the Chinese market back in March. But now the tiny ICS-powered handset has emerged in the flesh on Taiwanese site ?ePrice?, where it's been snapped from various angles and compared to a contemporary Sony handset, the Xperia P.

The Xperia Neo L is by modern standards a budget device -- there's a 1GHz Snapdragon S2 chip inside, 512MB of RAM and a 4-inch FWVGA LCD display. Sony hasn't cut any corners on the design, though, a the Neo L looks like a sleek device, furnished as it is in curvy white plastic with a metallic trim. Other premium features include the latest version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich.

More pics at the source link. The Sony Xperia Neo L is expected to land in China before the end of the month.

Revised ?Campus 2? Documents Shed More Light On Apple?s New Spaceship Building

apple-hq-1Here's a bit of Friday eye-candy for you. It was almost one year ago to the day that Steve Jobs appeared in front of the Cupertino City Council, pitching his vision of a visually striking, spaceship-esque Apple campus that would accomodate 12,000 employees. Apple's original set of plans for their new campus tore around the internet last August, and the city of Cupertino has just released the company's fourth set of revised files that dive into a bit more detail than those that have already made the rounds.

Google Says 'State-Sponsored,' Users Hear 'China'

Today in international tech news: Google didn't name names when it issued a warning about potential state-sponsored attacks on its users, but that hasn't stopped people from assuming that "state-sponsored" translates to "China-sponsored." Also: Starbucks' Irish Twitter account got followers steamed, and an ambitious plan could bring more mobile access to Congo.

Evernote Food

Evernote has been on a roll as of late rolling out updates to already existing apps and adding new ones to the mix. The latest to land on Android is Evernote Food. If you're a food lover, it's something you might want to take a look at. It's based on the same concept as Evernote itself but as the name implies it revolves around food that you've enjoyed.

Out at a great restaurant and want to share it with others? Snap a pic and have it uploaded to Evernote food and share the details with others with the included function of adding titles, tags and even location as it has Foursquare integration built right in. The app itself looks great especially after you start adding your own items to the mix.

Evernote Food is available on the Google Play Store right now but if you're looking to get a better look at the app in action or see how it can fit into your daily use, there is video below of the app in action for you all to check out.

SOEmote tracks our face, transplants our expressions onto an Everquest II persona (faces-on)

DNP Sony SOEmote handson

Sony's PlayStation division may have been the main focus this week at E3, but Sony Online Entertainment has something unique of its own to show off for MMORG players. Specifically, folks who are into the PC title Everquest II will soon be able to access a facial recognition feature called SOEmote (S-O Emote). It's no secret that these types of games require massive amounts of communication between players, and SOEmote is an attempt to make in-game conversations more personal than ever. Utilizing any webcam, the software is able map and track your noggin at 64 points, allowing your onscreen character to replicate any facial movements you make. We got a chance to mess around with a beta version of the software, and the results are impressive to say the least -- pretty much all of our facial expressions were accurately recreated. Join us past the break for more details and a hands-on faces-on video demo of it in action.

Apple closes in on $2.25 million settlement in Australia for disputed 4G iPad claim

The legal drama surrounding Apple's 4G labeling of some iPad models in Australia might be coming to an end. The Australian reports that Apple has agreed to pay $2.25 million to settle claims that the company's use of the term "Wi-Fi + 4G" was misleading because the tablet doesn't work with the country's 4G networks. Apple already offered to provide refunds to consumers who felt deceived by the labeling. The company also renamed the aforementioned model to "iPad WiFi + Cellular" in several territories. Apple hasn't quite made it across the finish line, however -- the settlement still requires court approval before it can be finalized and the Judge has adjourned the case until Wednesday to gather more information.

[Thanks, Matt, Clayton]

BattlePaint is an addictive geometric shooter game

battlepaint
In BattlePaint, you play a cube. In fact, you're not even a cube -- just a square. But boy, are you fast! And you can shoot in all directions. That's important, because there are baddies coming in from all over the place.

The "baddies" are swarms of other squares, in all sorts of pretty colors. They track you all over the screen, and you run around very quickly and just shoot, shoot, and shoot some more. If that doesn't sound very emotionally deep, it's because it isn't. But it's fun!

After you shoot a baddy, it splashes paint as it disappears. You need to skate across this blob of paint and "eat it up" to get points. This game is fast. It clocked in at around 60-70 FPS on my system, and was loads of fun to play. It does tend to insult you when you die, though, but don't be offended -- I don't think it's personal.
