Windows 8 Explorer to feature Ribbon UI, SkyDrive and Mesh integration?

windows 8 explorer ribbon
Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott have posted a second look at some of the early changes which have surface in Windows 8 milestone 3. First there was the restyled Welcome Screen, and now it appears that Microsoft is toying with bringing the Ribbon UI to Explorer.

The Ribbon, like in Microsoft Word and Excel, is context-aware, adding tabs for specific tasks which apply to the folder you're viewing -- such as library or picture management. You can also make out two new buttons in the status bar, which allow you to change the current folder's view style.

It's clear from all the placeholder images and repeated elements that this is very much a work in progress, but featuring the Ribbon more prominently in Windows 8 would certainly be a logical progression for Microsoft. It's slowly become more ubiquitous, moving beyond Office and into Wordpad, Paint, and several of the Windows Live Essentials applications.

There's more to the screenshots than the Ribbon UI, however. Our friend Long Zheng has noted two interesting elements in the images: Web sharing and sync (image after the break). That would likely mean users will be able to quickly upload files to SkyDrive and synchronize using Live Mesh right from Explorer in Windows 8. That's not a total surprise considering many of the earliest leaked images of Windows 8 showed Windows Live integration on the desktop.

Tripit update now shows trips you've already taken

Tripit for Android

I've long raved about the merits of Tripit for those of us who travel frequently. It's indispensable for keeping track of flights, hotels, car rentals -- everything, basically. (And it's available in free or paid form, which is a plus.) But until now it's only really kept track of upcoming trips. And that's certainly the most important thing to keep track of. But there are plenty of times when I'd like to look back on past trips and know where I stayed and how I got there.

Tripit's taken care of that in its latest update. You can now see past trips and all of the attached itineraries. So if you stayed in a great hotel but can't remember the name, you don't have have sort through e-mails. Or maybe you want to give kudos for a particularly good flight. (Or maybe you just can't remember what city your were in. It happens.)

Me? I'm totally going to use it for bragging rights. But hopefully your use will be a little more humble.

Acer Iconia Tab A500 ICS update now showing as available for some

Acer IcONIA a500

Acer not too long ago decided to let folks know their Android 4.0 ICS updates for the 7-inch A100 and the 10.1-inch A500 Tabs were well on their way. That said, Acer noted the A500 wouldn't see the update until April 27th in the US or Canada, yet some folks in the forums have already got their OTA update sent out to them.

If you have a Acer Iconia A500, go ahead and check for updates -- you may find it there waiting for you. If you're looking to find out what all the changes are, head on into the Android Central forums where some folks having been going through the update. While most stuff seems intact, notably missing is the Acer added ring which many appreciated on the device but was an Acer customization.

Zen Coding high-speed HTML shorthand plug-in updated

zencoding
Zen Coding made quite a splash when we first covered it almost a year ago. For those who aren't familiar, Zen is a fantastic form of shorthand for quickly hand-coding HTML. And today, a new version is out!

Here are some of the goodies version 0.7 brings to the party:

  • Text nodes: Writing something like a[href=/]{Click here} now works, and puts "Click here" within the link.
  • New actions added: Increment/decrement number under cursor, evaluate math expressions, and more.
  • Wrap with Abbreviation was upgraded.
There are several other improvements but they're all rather technical. If you use Zen Coding (or are intrigued by the concept) go ahead and read the release notes for this new version.

Zen Coding has official implementations for a ton of editors, including TextMate, Apatana, Coda, E2, Komodo, Notepad++, PSPad, and more. It also has unofficial builds for Vim, UltraEdit, Visual Studio and more.

If you want to play with Zen Coding without installing it, you can use the online demo to see some of its magic in action.

You can even play your music offline; on a plane, on top of a mountain, anywhere, you won't need 3G, Wi-Fi or the web to access it.

You can sign up today and get yourself a free 15-day trial, though Deezer does somewhat require a Facebook account to get started. There are ways around that though, offered via the website -- just not through the app. You can jump past the break for some more screenshots of the app in action as well as the download link.

HTML5 MP3 player lets you listen to your music library inside your browser

html5 browser mp3 audio player
While this slick little HTML5 audio player might not pack all of the features of your favorite desktop media application, it's still a very cool demonstration of what a Web app can do with access to local resources -- like MP3 and OGG files.

Just fire up http://antimatter15.github.com/player/player.html in your HTML5-compatible browser and browse to the topmost folder in your music library. The app will quickly build an index of all your tunes and let you start listening right inside your Web browser. Click on the filter library text, and you can enter a search string -- results load as you type.

There's a volume control, shuffle mode, play/pause control, and you can click and drag to skip forward or rewind during playback. As OMG! Ubuntu points out, you can even save the app to your hard drive and run it offline, which is pretty darn cool.

Not all browsers are equal when it comes to HTML5 implementation, of course. We found that Chrome worked the best, and Firefox was OK. It's also worth noting that this music player comes from the same developer that created one of our favorite restartless Firefox 4 add-ons, drag2up.

If a Truck Loaded With Sulfuric Acid Crashes, Does It Melt the Road? [Science]

This truck carrying 1,000 gallons of sulfuric acid crashed in Bartow, Florida, spilling its cargo over State Road 60. The driver was burned, people and animals have been evacuated, and a hazardous materials team in on the scene. But my question is: if sulfuric acid drops on a road, would the road melt? More »

Yahoo! Messenger now censors the links you share

Yahoo Messenger Big Brother censorshipWe've all thought it, but never dared think it could be true: what if Microsoft, Yahoo, and AOL actively monitor our instant messenger chats? What if mentions of 'bomb' and 'underage' are tracked and sent to law enforcement agencies? What if chat providers don't agree with the things we say, or the links we share, and filter or censor the content of our transmitted messages?

Well, it looks like our fears may actually have some basis in reality: Yahoo Messenger strips FilesTube links from instant messages. It doesn't tell either party that a URL has been removed from chat -- it just deletes it. Poof. FilesTube, in case you were wondering, is one of the largest file hosting meta search engines on the Web -- it indexes RapidShare, Megaupload, Mediafire, and many other 'cyberlocker' services.

It's fairly obvious why FilesTube links are being removed -- the Censor General at Yahoo is probably one of those perplexed primates who think all uses of BitTorrent are illegal -- but this situation poses a far more important question: is Yahoo censoring messages on the client side, or the server side. Does the messenger client itself maintain a list of 'blacklisted' words -- and if so, why are we not told that FilesTube links are banned? What other words and terms does Yahoo protect us from?
