Cloud Girlfriend will use a swarm of females to satisfy men

The social network Cloud Girlfriend
Cloud Girlfriend, despite what it sounds like, doesn't really have anything to do with cloud computing. Rather, it uses a cloud of women to pose as your girlfriend on Facebook, or your favorite social network of choice. The service is scheduled to launch 'soon,' and there's no indication of how much it will cost.

With the tagline 'The easiest way to get a girlfriend is to already have one,' Cloud Girlfriend promises to be a very interesting startup indeed. The brains of the operation, David Fuhriman, speaking to CNET, says it's all about fulfilling Maslow's hierarchy of needs. "CloudGirlfriend.com can fulfill Maslow's higher needs, even though the users know that the interaction is virtual. They will interact with a real person and see real profile images of the girl with whom they interact. This interaction can build confidence and esteem as well as provide real training experiences in navigating a friendship and a relationship."

Our concern, of course, is that it's very nearly April 1. We're also worried by the fact that Fuhriman has a name that sounds ominously like a social subculture that we've grown strangely attracted to here in the Download Squad bunker.

Finally, just stop and think about it for a second. Because your cloud girlfriend will be entirely virtual, she could be based anywhere. She could be underage -- or overage -- or she might be someone who you know in real life. She could even be a relative of yours, and you'd never know.

Let's not forget this is the Internet we're talking about, folks. Worst case scenario, she could turn out to be a hairy, male truck driver from Texas. Such as... your dad, perhaps?

Balloonduck Is A Much Prettier Twitter For Questions, Looking For 1,500 Beta Users

balloonducklogoI'm notoriously cynical when it comes to new social services and apps. I'm already drowning in the madness of Twitter, Facebook, Foursquare, Pinterest, LinkedIn, and the list goes on and on and on. But every once in a while a service pops up that fills a gap. No, it may not be the next Facebook or Twitter (or maybe it will), but it will make for a fun time when you feel like interacting with others on the interwebs. This is how I feel about Balloonduck. It's a brand new service that basically works as a Twitter for questions, with curiosity being the special of the day. So why not just ask questions on Twitter? That's the question on your mind and I might as well answer it. Well, I think the fundamental difference is user interface. Balloonduck is a sort of mix between the beauty of Pinterest (albeit horizontally) and the information of Twitter.

20 Ways to ?Recycle? Your Obsolete iPad 2

We've got a few iPad 2's lying around the office and quickly realized it's just far too embarrassing to be seen using them now that other staff members have the new iPad. So the Wired team decided to put our heads together and come up with a few ways you could repurpose your old, outdated tablet if you haven't already sold it off for parts.

Microsoft patent application gives us hope for head-mounted successor to Virtual Boy

Patent applications are full of hope and broken dreams, as it's far too easy to let a rampant imagination read beyond the layers of patent-attorney penned boilerplate. In the realm of the realistic, this application from Microsoft concerns a head-mounted display with a narrow-beam laser packing two dilation optics (us neither). If you then variate the diffraction grating between the two eyepieces, you create a three-dimensional virtual reality display. As much as we'd like to prowl the digital touchlines in Fifa Soccer with the Xbox equivalent of the Virtual Boy, it's more likely that we'll be stuck prowling our couches for years to come.

And Now for Something Completely Different: Taking the Windows 8 Plunge

Microsoft has made available a consumer preview version of its upcoming Windows 8 operating system that you can try out. The OS caught my eye because the tile-like user interface appears radically different from the boring old reiterations of Windows 3.1 -- with minor tweaks that irritatingly require getting used to after every upgrade. This looks like it's worth it.

Dave Morin Talks Path 2.1, Facebook?s IPO Effect, And Those New Funding Rumors [TCTV]

Screen shot 2012-03-19 at 3.43.22 PMTechCrunch TV talked to Path co-founder and CEO Dave Morin last week while we were at the South By Southwest Interactive conference in Austin, Texas. It's always interesting to talk to Morin, who is widely regarded as one of the most well-connected and in-the-know entrepreneurs in today's web startup landscape. In this interview, Morin discussed the latest update to the Path app, version 2.1, which was released earlier this month. We also got his thoughts on Path's larger API strategy, what Facebook's IPO will mean for the startup world, his favorite apps of the moment (he is yet another of Highlight's big-name fans), and Path's rumored plans for another round of funding.
