PatchWerk lets you control a monstrous modular synth with your browser (video)

PatchWerk
The Paradiso Synthesizer at the MIT Museum might be the largest homemade instrument of its type. That fact alone does make it interesting but, what makes this room-sized collection of wooden cabinets connected by a web of cables really stand out is the fact that you can control it from the comfort of you home with nothing more than a browser. The web app, PatchWerk, lets individuals from around the world come together and commandeer Joe Paradiso's creation... at least in a limited form. As you turn dials and flip switches you can hear the soundscape change, and their real life counterparts react in kind on the museum floor. Hit up the source link to try it out for yourself and check out the video after the break to see the monstrosity you'll be hijacking.

Tim ?The Freak? Lincecum Co-founds Stealth Startup 12Society, More Celebs To Come

Screen shot 2012-03-16 at 7.18.32 PMBack in October 2010, billionaire tech investor Mark Cuban jumped into the daily deals game with a $1.5 million seed investment in gift online shopping deals startup JungleCents. Because the startup took a somewhat alternative approach to daily deals, using a lead generation model to give publishers supplemental revenue streams, today, JungleCents has seen some pretty good traction, as its deals are now reaching 2.2 million email addresses (publishers included), and its sign-up rate tripled in the last three months of 2011. However, at the beginning of this year, Cuban acquired all of the JungleCents assets, allowing the startup's co-founders, Sameer Mehta and Nadir Hyder, to take off to found a new venture. Today, we're getting a bit of a glimpse into what the guys have been working on, as they are officially ready to announce a new startup, called 12Society. Joining Mehta as co-founders of the new venture are Chirayu Patel, a former solutions architect at VMWare, and one slightly more well-known name: San Francisco Giant and two-time Cy Young Award winner, Tim Lincecum.

Kainy remote desktop app brings PC games to Android (video)

Kainy remote desktop app brings PC games to Android
Watching Skyrim run smooth and sweet on a Tegra 3 slate did a lot to re-kindle our excitement for remote gaming on mobile devices. Hoping to cash in on that buzz, a $5 app called "Kainy" has appeared on Google Play that promises to bring PC games to Android handsets at up to 60fps with customizable control interfaces, 100 preset templates and accelerometer control. The demo video after the break is full of fast cuts that make it hard to judge performance, and user reviews suggest Kainy may prioritize lag-reduction over resolution with some ugly results, but then these are still early days. One thing is for sure: picking an Android device for its processor grunt will make a lot of sense in 2012.

[Thanks, Drew]

These Guys Skipped Out on a Bar Tab By Parachuting Off a 63 Story Skyscraper [WTFriday]

Have you heard this one before? Four guys dressed in business suits walk into a fancy bar and order a Negroni cocktail... that might sound like a start of a bad joke but in reality it's the beginning of a ridiculously awesome stunt. After finishing their drinks, the daredevils skip out on their tab by jumping off the bar's 55th story balcony and parachuting to safety. More »

How Facebook Got Its Green Back [Sustainability Infographic]

Facebook Sustainability LogoToday Facebook released an animated infographic about its ongoing journey to sustainability, explaining "2010 marked an awakening for Facebook?s sustainability efforts". As viewers scroll past green stats like that 47% of Facebook employees commute via alternative methods, birds flutter and bikes whiz by. Designed by digital consultancy Beyond, the new graphic also notes Facebook's sustainable data centers, efficient photo storage, and solar-powered campus. The infographic quietly implies that before 2010, Facebook was too focused on scaling to make going green a priority. But by touting its new commitment to the environment, Facebook could boost its public image and bolster recruiting efforts with eco-aware talent.

UK property search site Rightmove launches new Android app on March 19.

Android Central

Rightmove is one of the biggest websites in the UK. Its property listings cover the length and breadth of the country and over 20000 estate agents and property developers. It's also how I found the house I currently own. Until now all that was missing was an Android app. As of March 19, Rightmove's first Android app will be live in the Google Play Store to cater to all your house-hunting needs.

There was an iOS app released from Rightmove way back in 2009, followed by a Samsung SmartTV app last year. Quite why it has taken so long to come to Android is a mystery, but they got here which is the important thing.

On the face of it, we're getting a full experience too. By hooking into your Rightmove account, you can share listings with other people, and look at your favourites on the go. It also takes full advantage of Google Maps by offering street view options. Seeing the street is almost as important as seeing the house, after all.

Full-screen floor plans and photos are also promised, as is the ability to contact agents from within the app. On release Rightmove will be free in the Google Play Store. You'll find a quick walkthrough video after the break.

Zen Coding high-speed HTML shorthand plug-in updated

zencoding
Zen Coding made quite a splash when we first covered it almost a year ago. For those who aren't familiar, Zen is a fantastic form of shorthand for quickly hand-coding HTML. And today, a new version is out!

Here are some of the goodies version 0.7 brings to the party:

  • Text nodes: Writing something like a[href=/]{Click here} now works, and puts "Click here" within the link.
  • New actions added: Increment/decrement number under cursor, evaluate math expressions, and more.
  • Wrap with Abbreviation was upgraded.
There are several other improvements but they're all rather technical. If you use Zen Coding (or are intrigued by the concept) go ahead and read the release notes for this new version.

Zen Coding has official implementations for a ton of editors, including TextMate, Apatana, Coda, E2, Komodo, Notepad++, PSPad, and more. It also has unofficial builds for Vim, UltraEdit, Visual Studio and more.

If you want to play with Zen Coding without installing it, you can use the online demo to see some of its magic in action.

Flipboard Gets Retina-Ready, But Will Users Spend More Time In-App?

retina_blog_2cGood news, new iPad users: everyone's favorite iPad news magazine Flipboard (OK, my favorite, but I hear the Flipboard / Zite battles get fierce) is now Retina-ready. I know, we all thought the enhanced app would be approved by tonight, but, as it turns out, the update was shipped a bit earlier. Consider this your PSA. However, in the brief note Flipboard sent me about the update, something struck me as interesting: company co-founder Evan Doll casually speculated that the Retina Display would lead to longer Flipboard reading sessions. Will that actually be true, though, in the long-term?
