Torrent Users Throw a Hissy Fit Over Changing File Types [Piracy]

Sadly, even though digital pirates are anarchic on one level, they do still need rules and, in fact, the overlords of torrent sites often meet to establish quality standards. Sadly, their latest decisions have the torrent community up in arms. More »

Microsoft releases sexy Bing app for iPad

It's still a bit odd seeing Microsoft deliver apps for Apple's mobile platform. And it's even stranger still to see one as sexy as the new Bing app for iPad, which brings a slick, immersive search experience to Apple's tablet.

Just as a regular search on bing.com will, the Bing app for iPad tailors the results it displays based on what you're searching for. There are loads of custom views, covering everything from movies and maps to weather and shopping. The app also offers a heads-up display of currently trending searches, complete with related images, which is an iPad-exclusive feature.

Navigation is a breeze thanks to multitouch controls, allowing users to flick or swipe through results. And while the development team refers to the app as "touch and decide," Bing Voice Search is also built in -- making it easy to start a query without using the iPad's on-screen keyboard.

The Bing app for iPad is available for download now from the App Store.

Opera 11.10 gets HTML5 File API support, IMAP improvements

opera 11.10
The crew in Oslo keeps plugging away at Opera 11.10, and the latest snapshot build includes a number of improvements to Opera's built-in email client -- as well as HTML5-related additions.

On the IMAP front, Opera now supports special folders like sent items, spam, and trash. It also better handles duplicate items in Gmail -- such as those which appear in all mail and under your custom labels.

Opera 11.10 now partially supports the HTML5 File API as well, which means your favorite Web apps (like Gmail) may soon begin adding Opera to the list of supported browsers.

You can download the latest Opera 11.10 snapshot for Windows, Mac, or Linux from the official release post.

Update: The Opera 11.10 RC is now available, as pointed out by SlashZaku in the comments. Thanks!

TED 2012: UPenn Flying Robots Play a Mean Keyboard

Some of the biggest leaps in aerial mechanics at the University of Pennsylvania have come straight out of professor Vijay Kumar's mechanical engineering lab. Small, unmanned aircraft can coordinate their positions across a group without the aid of any central coordinator.

Google bids $900 million for Nortel's patents to protect against litigation trolls

Nortel, once one of the biggest telecoms company in the world but now in the death throes of bankruptcy, has selected Google's $900 million bid for its patent portfolio as the stalking horse bid. This doesn't mean that Google will automatically win Nortel's massive array of telecoms patents, but it does mean that Google is the preferred buyer.

Google, which has a history of lobbying for patent law reform, has been the target of many patent litigation suits. Google's relative infancy means that it has a lot less patents in the vault than big-hitters like Microsoft, Oracle and IBM, and buying Nortel's portfolio of 6,000 patents could provide better protection against patent litigation in the future. It's worth noting that both Apple and RIM have showed interested in the portfolio, too.

Mashable speculates that the patents -- which are nearly all telecoms-related -- will be used to defend against Oracle's attacks on Android's use of Java. We reckon that Google is simply looking to cover its future endeavors in the world of networking. In the absence of patent law reform, and continued threats to net neutrality, owning a bunch of telecoms patents sounds like a very sensible move.

German court says enough is enough, throws out two patent cases between Samsung and Apple

SamsungApple

A Manheim regional court in Germany today threw out two patent disputes between Samsung and Apple: the first regarding Apple's infrigement on Samsung's 3G/UMTS technology, the second regarding Samsung's use of slide-to-unlock gesutres on its devices. The ruling against Samsung is the third in a row in Germany, while the ruling against Apple is the first of two, the second scheduled for a March 16 hearing.

The court decision comes just a few weeks after a Munich court ruled that Motorola had indeed infringed upon Apple's slide-to-unlock patents, resulting in alterations being made to Motorola's unlock feature.

Today's ruling is just a drop in the bucket, as there is upwards of at least 14 disputes between Samsung and Apple pending in Germany, with more waging around the world. Samsung has already promised to appeal today's decision, while Apple will likely do the same.

The back-and-forth between Apple and other manufacturers is far from over, though it is refreshing to see a judge as fed up with it as everyone else is. With Apple, Samsung, Motorola and HTC all slated to release some heavy-hitting devices in the coming months, we'll be sure to keep you posted as the war rages on.
