AT&T Adjusts Data-Throttling Policy in Response to Customer Complaints

In response to recent widespread criticism, AT&T announced Thursday that it will simplify elements of its throttling policy for unlimited-data-plan subscribers. All unlimited-data-plan users who exceed 3GB of data in a single month will now experience reduced speeds on AT&T's 3G network for the remainder of their billing cycles. 4G subscribers, meanwhile, can use up to 5GB of data in a billing period, after which data speeds will be throttled.

Windows 8 welcome screen revealed, looks very Metro

windows 8 welcome screen
It's not really a secret the Microsoft had planned on bringing bits of Windows Phone 7's Metro UI to Windows 8, but we haven't seen a lot of really telling evidence. However, with the Windows 8 milestone 3 build now available to Microsoft Connect partners, it was really just a matter of time before we started to get a peek.

Thanks to Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott, we've now had a glimpse at what the Windows 8 welcome screen will look like. As you can see, the typography is very Metro indeed. Within Windows also mentions that the background image is customizable, and we're wondering if it might not pull from your current Windows 8 theme. This particular shot shows the CTRL + ALT + DELETE login option, but we imagine you'll still be able to log in by clicking your account picture tile as well.

Rivera and Thurrott also mention that the tablet version of the welcome screen will allow you to log in by swiping a pattern on the screen -- as you can on current Android devices.

LG confirms Optimus L3 will introduce L-Style to Europe this month

Fresh from its official debut in the warm Catalan sun, LG has confirmed that the Optimus L3 will be hitting European shelves this month, making it the first L-style phone out of the gate. After Europe, the dual-core 800MHz slice of Gingerbread will leave a crumbly trail eastwards, landing in Russia, then Asia. The official PR stops short of telling us if it'll go full-circle and arrive on US shores, simply teasing budget phone-seeking Americans with "followed by other markets around the world."

Archos announces kid-friendly 7-inch Ice Cream Sandwich tablet, dubbed ChildPad

Archos ChildPad

Kids love to play with our tablets. They're colorful, active, and entertaining -- exactly what a kid likes (no matter what age). But many of us don't feel comfortable letting our kids handle a seemingly delicate, very expensive, piece of glass and plastic. Archos gets this, and they have announced the 7-inch ChildPad. Even better, they understand that we're reluctant to spend upwards of $500 on something that youngsters may very break, and have priced it at $129.

Ill let that sink in for a second -- $129.

For the cost of dinner and a movie for two, you can have a full featured tablet, running Android 4.0, complete with a child-friendly app market. While not a spec powerhouse, the ChildPad has a 1GHz CPU and a full 1GB of RAM, and comes pre-loaded with a slew of things kids would want, like puzzles, games, even Angry Birds. The ChildPad was designed to fulfill COPPA and CIPA regulations, and has a full suite of parental controls built into the browser. You'll see it on store shelves sometime in March.

And your kids will have ICS on their Android device before you do. See the press release after the break.

Conserve Your Budget with iPad Rental

Technology does not have to break your budget if you consider an iPad rental rather than a purchase. The cost to purchase an iPad outright can be extremely high. Many people may not have that kind of cash handy. Additionally, Most wireless/3G companies lock the customer into lengthy agreements that may end up being far from perfect. iPad rentals also give the customer the freedom to move on, or stay put if desired. Many online stores offer renting options. Renting [...]

SugarSync for Android updated, adds enhanced sharing and on-the-go file management
Not long after handing its Android application a video-friendly refresh, SugarSync's back with more updated goodies. Now, the sweet Dropbox adversary is stuffing version 3.5.1 with some productivity and social-driven bits. The rejuvenated app, which won't ask anything of your wallet, is boosting its sharing features by allowing you to handout contacts, files and folders via Zuck's social network and that famed 140-character box. Facebook and Twitter's integration doesn't stop there, SugarSync's letting anyone grab 500MB of extra storage at no cost by referring other humans through the aforementioned sites. Another new feature is the on-the-fly file management, which essentially allows you to copy, move and delete any of your docs while you're on the go. Eager to give it a try? It's up for grabs at the source link below or you can get it directly from your Big G-approved device.

Four more NHL teams release official apps

Buffalo

The Anaheim Ducks, Boston Bruins, Buffalo Sabres and Dallas Stars have finally released Android apps. Official apps for NHL teams have been slow to come. Some have had them for a while, but since they're not all developed by the same company, their releases will be staggered. These four teams are developed by the same company, so the apps follow a consistent layout. Once you open the app, the home menu will display the most recent media produced by the specific NHL team. Clicking on the Menu button at the bottom will bring up a variety of options:

  • Live In-Game
  • Media
  • Player Info
  • Standings & Scores
  • Link to team-specific arena information
  • Schedule
  • Tickets
  • Promotions
  • Fan Zone
  • More (whch includes About, Preferences, Feedback, and FAQ)

In addition to the recently released apps, please find links to the other official NHL apps after the break. Enjoy puck nuts!

Ubuntu's 'Precise Pangolin' emerges into Beta, enjoys the fresh air (video)

So, it looks like Precise Pangolin has just crawled out of its Alpha hiding hole, and into the open plains of Beta testing. The Beta 1 version of Ubuntu 12.04 is available to download today, and Beta 2 is already in the crosshairs, one month from now. Being an LTS (Long Term Support) release, we knew changes weren't going to be drastic, but there are some noteworthy ones. We heard RhythmBox would be back as the default media player, and it is, and it looks like Ubuntu One synching also showed up as expected. Under the hood, the kernel goes from 3.2.0-12.21 to 3.2.0-17.27 and RC6 for Sandy Bridge systems has been enabled. The final freeze is only eight weeks away, so if you want to steer the Pangolin in the right direction, curl up on that source link for the goods.

[Thanks, Robert]
