Opera 11.10 includes improved power saving features

opera 11.10 battery power
Just recently, the Opera 11.10 release candidate was made available for download. It brought a handful of important feature additions -- like HTML5 File API support and IMAP enhancements -- and loads of bugfixes. Nestled in amongst the other details in the Opera team's announcement is one more interesting tidbit: Opera 11.10 offers improved battery optimizations.

The timing here is certainly interesting, what with Microsoft's recent report on how much power the top five Web browsers consume. In its findings, Opera 11 was fairly low in the standings. While we've not seen any new benchmarks yet, we're curious to know whether the Opera 11.10 RC offers any significant gains.

If you're running Opera 11.10 on a laptop, let us know if you're seeing an improvement in your battery life while browsing!

Is Facebook Locking Down Its Social Graph Data?

For all the reasons that Facebook is a massive success, it has one card that trumps the likes of Twitter, Google and LinkedIn: it knows who your real-life friends are. Kindly, Facebook shares that data with third parties apps using its Social Graph API—but it seems that privilege might not be a given for much longer. More »

Twitter announces Vine video sharing service

Twitter announces Vine video sharing service

Twitter has announced Vine, a new service and app it has aquired that allows you to record and share videos. The videos are very short, with a limit of six seconds for each post. Twitter announced the launch on their blog:

Today, we?re introducing Vine: a mobile service that lets you capture and share short looping videos. Like Tweets, the brevity of videos on Vine (6 seconds or less) inspires creativity. Now that you can easily capture motion and sound, we look forward to seeing what you create.

Vine also commented briefly on the acquisition:

We're also happy to share the news that Vine has been acquired by Twitter. Our companies share similar values and goals; like Twitter, we want to make it easier for people to come together to share and discover what's happening in the world. We also believe constraint inspires creativity, whether it's through a 140-character Tweet or a six-second video.

Videos are recorded by holding a finger on the screen until you have captured the video that you wanted. Playing videos in the app is a simple matter of scrolling to the video you want to see, then it plays on a loop until you scroll to another video. You can sign in to Vine with your Twitter account or email address.

Videos can be shared with Twitter and Facebook, and Vine says that more sharing options are coming down the road. You can download Vine for free right now.

Update: We've posted a Vine review to better describe some of the issues we're all facing.

Woz Says Kutcher's Steve Jobs Movie Scene Never Happened

The first scene from iJOBS—the biopic on Steve Jobs starring Ashton Kutcher—may be pretty decent, but it never happened. Not even close, according to Steve Wozniak, who says they "never had such interaction and roles." More »

Internet?s Pace Of Innovation Will Force The Data Center To Open Up

More hardware will open up -- it's inevitable. Hardware in the data center is no exception. Hardware in the data center is no exception. As Tim O'Reilly said in his keynote at the Open Compute Summit, innovation in the data center is critical for keeping up with the Internet's pace of innovation. A first step is opening the hardware so people can hack it and adapt it to the data that flows at an ever-increasing velocity.

Facebook launches unified mobile site, announces 250 million mobile users

Facebook has announced that its two mobile sites -- m.facebook.com and touch.facebook.com -- have been unified, bringing a simpler mobile experience to Facebook users. And there are a lot of those -- a quarter billion, according to Facebook.

Smartphone users won't be losing any functionality because of the consolidation. If your phone supported the enhacned features offered by touch.facebook.com, the new site will automatically flip the switch when you visit.

Rolling the sites together helps simplify things for Facebook's developer team. Now changes can be pushed to a single site instead of two separate sites, which makes it easier to ensure that all mobile users receive a nearly identical experience regardless of the device they're using.

The new Facebook mobile can also check to see if your phone supports geolocation. If it doesn't, you won't be seeing much of Facebook Places -- which obviously relies heavily on geolocation. Images can also be optimized on the fly to keep page performance from suffering on less powerful devices. You can see the three different versions of the share button below, courtesy our friends at TechCrunch.

Moog Sub Phatty analog synthesizer hands-on (video)

Moog Sub Phatty handson video

A few days back, Moog teased a new synthesizer that we would come to meet properly as the Sub Phatty. Once we hit the show floor here in California, we made sure to drop by for live look. The analog unit features every bit of the fine craftsmanship that we've come to know Moog for crankin' out of its factory in the mountains of North Carolina despite the affordable $1,100 price tag. Sub Phatty keeps with the classic snyth aesthetic and Moog design trademarks including soft-touch coated side panels -- a staple of the Phatty line -- and knobs that look and feel prime for extreme mileage. Aside from a dapper exterior, the big draw here is the new Multidrive tech that graces the control panel and inner workings of the device. We could give a detailed textual explanation of said feature, but we'll let Amos Gaynes, product development specialist at Moog, do all of the chatting in the video that follows after the break. Speaking of the jump, you'll find an audio sample taken straight off of the Sub Phatty's frontside here at NAMM 2013.

Harness The Magic Of Magnets To Stop Cables From Sliding Off Your Desk

A strategically placed binder clip or a chunk of cinderblock are both cheap and easy ways to stop unused nuisance cables from falling off your desk. But why settle for those eyesores when the MOS, or Magnetic Organization System, provides a far more elegant way to tether all your wires? More »
