Twitter for iPhone update brings back swipe shortcut

Twitter for iPhone has received yet another update and brings back some high-demand features including the swipe shortcut. There is also a nice clear warning that explicitly states that the Find Friends feature accesses your contacts' email addresses and phone numbers.

Scientists Create Mutant Yeasts with Heavy Ion Beam, Sake Ensues [Booze]

While the newly-generated variety of brewing yeast cooked up by boffins at the RIKEN Nishina Center for Accelerator-Based Science doesn't shoot laser beams or gain super-strength when you piss it off, it does apparently make a very tasty rice wine. More »

Initial Snapdragon S4 benchmarks show promising performance

Android Central

It's not often we get excited about benchmark numbers, but we'll make an exception today. Early benchmarks of the first chips based upon Qualcomm's new Snapdragon S4 ("Krait") architecture have appeared, showing dramatic improvements from earlier Snapdragon chips. The tests run by AnandTech on Qualcomm's S4 Mobile Development Platform (powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core MSM8960 chip), show single and mutli-threaded CPU performance dwarfing earlier models. This includes TI OMAP chips used in phones like the Galaxy Nexus and Droid RAZR, as well as the much-vaunted 1.2GHz Exynos chip in the Galaxy S II.

The chip produced leading web benchmark scores too, according to AnandTech's results. The site recorded its lowest (best) SunSpider Javascript score with Qualcomm's new MDP, at just 1532 in the stock Android 4.0 browser. And graphical tests on the MSM8960's Adreno 225 GPU were almost as impressive, with Qualcomm's MDP being beaten by the iPhone 4S and Galaxy S II in just a couple of GPU tests.

So the MSM8960 is shaping up to be an impressive chip indeed. We're expecting to see it in a number of mid-range and high-end devices this year, including HTC's "Ville" (rumored to ship as the HTC One S).  We'll no doubt hear more about this chip, and the devices it'll be powering, at MWC next week.

Chrome 11 beta adds new experimental APIs for proxies, Web navigation

google chrome 11 proxy
Google Chrome 11 -- which just recently made the move to the browser's beta channel -- has received a minor update that gives developers access to two new APIs.

The first is a full-featured proxy API, which will, for example, allow users to set different proxy servers for normal browsing and Incognito mode. Proxy auto-config scripts are also supported by the API.

The second -- Web Navigation Extension -- is a bit more expansive. This API will allow devs to build everything from more powerful safe browsing extensions -- like Traffic Light -- to data analysis and reporting extensions.

Both APIs are currently experimental, so you'll need to enable them on the about:flags page to try out any relevant extensions. Apart from a proxy example built by Google and shipped with the Chromium source, we're not aware of any examples just yet, however. We'll let you know when we spot any slick, new extensions which do surface.

Snow Art: Much Cooler Than Crop Circles [Art]

Crop circles are so 1990s. Nowadays, my favorite mysterious, creative phenomenon is snow art. Did aliens make it? Does it indicate some old druid structure hidden beneath the snow? Or is it just down to some insanely creative artist? More »

The Amazing Special Effects of The Walking Dead Are What Make the Show Scary [Video]

Just like Boardwalk Empire, The Walking Dead is a fake good show. All the style and swagger, none of the substance. It had its moment during season one but this season has been a snoozefest filled with yawns, farms and not enough walkers. But you know what's still great? The special effects. More »

LG busts out a trio of L-series phones in the run up to MWC

LG's gotten all excited and spilled even more beans ahead of MWC as to what offerings we'll see at the big Iberian shindig. The L-Series is a trio of phones we're already part-way familiar with, given that the budget L3 was leaked back in January. The L5 and L7 are aimed at the mid-range and premium ends of the market, running ICS and packing 4-inch and 4.3-inch displays respectively. Whilst there's no further detail about specs, we know that the L-series shares the same DNA as the Prada Phone 3, so we'd imagine that as a good benchmark. The PR boasts of "five aesthetic elements," all of which seem to emphasize that the phone's going to be quite thin. After the break we've got that brief statement in full and the nagging sense that there's no surprise forthcoming when LG takes to the stage next week.
