TECHNOLOGY RED ALERT: SEN. CHUCK GRASSLEY H V AN IPHONE [Twitter]

It's not easy being Chuck Grassley. First, some jerk makes fun of your inability to spell on Twitter. Then, you continue to use Twitter without learning how to use a keyboard. Then you're hacked. But will an iPhone change everything? More »

White Galaxy Nexus hands-on: a taste of vanilla-flavored Ice Cream Sandwich (video)

White Galaxy Nexus hands-on: a taste of vanilla-flavored Ice Cream Sandwich (video)
When it rains it pours. Hot on the heels of last week's fabulous white Nokia N9, we just received Samsung's freshly minted "chic white" Galaxy Nexus thanks to our friends at Negri Electronics. This handsome phone -- which is spec-wise identical to the HSPA+ version we reviewed last year -- sheds the default gunmetal gray skin for a lovely satin white finish. Further differences include a chrome camera pod (instead of black) and a much smaller dot-pattern on the textured battery cover. The handset, which is running Android 4.0.2, goes by the name "yakjuxw", meaning that unlike its official "yakju" cousin, it won't be getting software updates directly from Google. Still, the bootloader is unlocked, making it relatively painless to switch ROMs. What's most intriguing about this particular unit, however, is that it shipped with a North American charger instead of the expected UK adapter. Is this an unannounced US / Canadian market device? Go ahead and ponder that while you savor a taste of vanilla-flavored Ice Cream Sandwich in our gallery below, then watch our unboxing video after the break.

The Netherlands Looks to Take the Lead in Rational Copyright Legislation [Copyright]

US copyright laws are designed to protect the "fair use" of copyrighted content such as mash-ups and remixes—or they were, at least, until the advent of DMCA Takedown Notices. The Dutch government has taken notes on America's IP failures and is reportedly looking to explicitly protect such DMCA fodder, much to the chagrin of the European Union. More »

Canon PowerShot G1 X review

Canon's G1 X boasts a beefy 14-megapixel resolution and a tank-load of ambition. Its mandate, no less, is to deliver the image quality and control of a DSLR inside the discreet body of a compact, aiming to attract serious photographers who want to travel light or supplement their main kit. That's why the G1 X houses a substantial 1.5-inch CMOS sensor, stretching to around 80 percent of the size of APS-C, along with an anti-minimalist array of dials, knobs and buttons to provide quick access to manual settings. It also explains why the G1 X is 30 percent heavier than both its evolutionary ancestor and some of its competitors, and why its price tag is equally hefty: $800, which is SLR-like in all the wrong ways. We've had this shooter long enough to gather our thoughts, but as to whether it deserves a smile or a snarl, you'll have to read on to find out.

Google's acquisition of Motorola Mobility approved by U.S. Department of Justice

Googlerola

The U.S. Department of Justice has approved Google's $12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola Mobility, just hours after the deal was approved by the European Commission.

The key phrasing from the DoJ: “The division concluded that the specific transactions at issue are not likely to significantly change existing market dynamics."

When Google first announced the deal, they stated that it was done to "supercharge" Android with Motorola Mobility's extensive patent portfolio. And in addition to basic market competition, that's exactly what the DoJ was looking at as part of three investigations. The feds don't appear to be overly impressed with Google's intentions, saying that "Google’s commitments were more ambiguous and do not provide the same direct confirmation of its SEP licensing policies." And as such, it's going to keep an eye on things and that "The division will not hesitate to take appropriate enforcement action to stop any anticompetitive use of [standard essential patents] rights."

Where it really gets good, however, is when the DoJ basically says that in the course of its investigation, it determined that Microsoft and RIM have too low a market share to use as offensive weapons the patents they have a stake in as part of the Rockstar Bidco purchase (and whose purchase was also approved in the same ruling today). It also alludes that it considers those patents to be essential, and that if Google were to seek a licensing agreement with them, the Rockstar Bidco group would have offer fair terms.

In other words, if everybody doesn't play nice -- or at least fairly -- Uncle Sam's gonna step in and lay the smack down.

The Justice Department also notes that Microsoft already has licensing agreements with a buttload of Android manufacturers anyway, so it's kind of moot for the folks in Redmond. But essentially calling Microsoft and RIM "small" in the process is amusing.

With respect to RIM’s and Microsoft’s acquisition of Nortel patents, their low market shares in mobile platforms would likely make a strategy to harm rivals either through injunctions or supracompetitive royalties based on the acquired Nortel SEPs unprofitable.  Because of their low market shares, they are unlikely to attract a sufficient number of new customers to their mobile platforms to compensate for the lost patent royalty revenues.  Moreover, Microsoft has cross-license agreements in place with the majority of its Android-based OEM competitors, making such a strategy even less plausible for it.

Now we all wait to see what China has to say, but this deal likely is all but complete.

Windows 8 to feature adaptive Aero colorization, get it now on Windows 7

windows 8 aero colorization aura
While we've still yet to see anything truly Earth-shattering, the tandem of Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott continues to churn out insight about interesting new features they've discovered in Windows 8 milestone 3. The latest discovery is that Aero in Windows 8 will be able to automatically adapt itself to match your current wallpaper image. It's a bit like what Windows 7 already does with your taskbar icons: if a program alert needs your attention, the icon will glow using the predominant color (e.g. Firefox should glow orange).

And yes, you can already make Windows 7 behave this way if you like. Over at CodePlex, there's a little program called Aura that parks itself in your system tray and automatically adjusts your window borders to compliment your wallpaper images. The effect is quite nice, and you can try it out by minimizing your windows and cycling through your theme's wallpapers (right click on your desktop and choose next desktop background).
