Googleplex expansion plans hint at Project X lab, wireless testing facilities

Googleplex expansion plans hint at Project X lab, wireless testing facilities
Google's eyeing up some vacant space at the end of its lawn to throw $120 million at a Grand Designs-style extension to its Mountain View campus. Residents will soon see the @Home lab, purportedly to test fully formed consumer devices and whatever secret home entertainment / wireless communications gear we've heard rumblings about. The new development will enable Project X (the interesting one with the James Bond-gizmos, not the lecture series website) to move into a meatier facility where they can perfect projects like Majel and the self-driving car. The most notable development (according to business-types, anyway) is the "Experience Center," a 120,000 square foot private museum / demonstration space for Google to schmooze its most important clients in style (wait, aren't we the most important clients?). VIPs will be invited to play with the newest toys the company can produce before gorging themselves on canapés, or something. Californians wandering past 1600 Shoreline Blvd down the road from the Googleplex, might also notice a new building that's not covered in official branding -- because it's going to be a new wireless testing facility that's being shielded from external signals. At least, that's where we'll be pitching a tent with a couple of long lenses when it opens for business.

LTE-equipped Galaxy Tab 8.9 gets European approval

Galaxy Tab 8.9
LTE isn't quite as wide spread in the Old World as it is over here in the western hemisphere but, as many European countries race to get their 4G deployed, top notch devices are already starting to roll in. The GT-P7320, better known as the Galaxy Tab 8.9, just passed through the Global Certification Forum, bound for unspecified EU nation. This particular model supports both HSPA on the 900MHz and 2100MHz bands, and LTE over 800MHz and 2.6GHz. Carrier, release date, price -- pretty much everything about the device's debut is a mystery at this point. But, with Mobile World Congress just a couple of weeks away, we're sure it won't hold on to its secrets for long.

Windows 8 now available to OEMs via Microsoft Connect

windows 8Select Microsoft Connect partners -- major players like HP -- have been given their first taste of Windows 8. According to various sources, the build string currently sits at 7971.0.110324-1900, which is the third milestone build of the successor to Windows 7.

So far, there haven't been many details revealed about Windows 8. An actual System Restore -- which is being referred to as History Vault -- has been reported, and the feature will allow users and administrators to completely roll back a system to a previous state. A factory reset option is also said to be included.

We've also seen Windows Live integration taking shape on the desktop. It's believed that you'll be able to log in to Windows 8 using your Windows Live credentials, not just a traditional offline Windows username and password.

All that's left now is for a leaked Windows 8 build to show up on a torrent site. Feel free to tip us if you see that happen.

Is the Senate Trying to Sneak In a New SOPA Bill? [Sopa]

After the Internet bandied up together and killed SOPA, you'd think the government would be a little weary of introducing SOPA-like bills less the Internet start a revolution and start calling out dumb politicians. Guess not though because it looks like Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid still wants to censor the internet with a new bill hidden under the mask of cybesecurity. SOPA in sheep's clothing. More »

Julie?s Gadget Diary 02-11-12

A few weeks ago I posted a review of Zevia Stevia sweetened soda where I told everyone about my quest to find a healthier replacement for Diet Coke. While I really enjoyed some of the Zevia flavors, the price was way too high for me to justify buying it on a regular basis, so it [...]

Very early CyanogenMod 9 builds available for LG Optimus 2X, G2X

Android Central

Development of CyanogenMod 9 continues apace, with the main dev overseeing LG devices releasing a very early "self-KANG" build for LG Optimus 2X and T-Mobile G2X owners. Ricardo Cerquiera reminds anyone wanting to try out his early builds to expect bugs and instability, as CM9 is still very much work-in-progress.

Here we go... CyanogenMod 9 builds for the p990 (LG Optimus 2X) and p999 (T-Mobile G2x).

As I wrote before, these are not supported, and updates may or may not happen in the future. Do not report issues with them to me, please; I'm fully aware of what works and doesn't, what's stable or crashy, and I need no reminders :-)

In a development thread over on RootzWiki, the developer (and users) have pointed out a few specific bugs, including non-functional media acceleration, glitches in certain apps like Chrome Beta, wonky camera support and music playback issues.

So it's a bit rough around the edges, just as we'd expect from such an early build. You won't want to use this as your daily driver, but if you want a sneak peek at CM9 and Ice Cream Sandwich on your Optimus 2X or G2X, you can find download information at the source link.
