Pentax K-01 leaks, wants to be your retro-looking mirrorless friend

Pentax K-01 leaks, wants to be your retro-looking mirrorless friend
Above is a purported leak of Pentax's upcoming K-01 -- a retro-inspired mirrorless camera which is apparently set for reveal soon. Divulged in a bevy of official-looking shots on Pentax Forums, the diminutive shooter will apparently be available in several colors alongside its incredibly-thin 40mm f/2.8 pancake lens. Also shown are closeups of a dedicated HDR mode up-top, alongside dedicated red and green buttons, and a curious signature by designer Marc Newson adjacent to its battery cover. Perplexed by the sum of its parts like we are? Well, until Pentax reveals all, get a acquainted with it in the source links below.

[Thanks, Ben]

Never Before Seen Satellite Spy Shots from the Depths of the Cold War [Space]

Depths might not be the right expression, actually, as all of these photographs were taken from space, decades and decades ago. Russian rockets, aircraft carriers, secret military compounds—one legendary spy satellite saw it all from orbit. More »

Koss Adds Mic and Inline Remote to Classic PortaPro

One of my favorite sets of headphones just got a little bit favorite-er. The Koss PortaPro dates back to those dark ages of stonewashed denim and shoulder pads, the 1980s. The simple folding cans, with their thin metal headband and amazing-sounding earpieces have always been a bargain at $50, both comfortable and open enough to [...]

Evoluce Win&I brings Kinect gesture controls to Windows 7

evoluce win&i windows 7 gesture control kinect
We've been looking at some pretty cool Kinect and Windows interactions for a while now, but we were hoping that the release of an official SDK would lead to even more coolness. Evoluce has stepped up, and is now offering Win&I -- a full-featured gesture control system for Windows 7.

The company claims that a range of up to four meters is supported, which should be perfect for just about any home theater setting. In the video embedded after the break, you can see an Evoluce demonstrator flip through a photo album, pan through a map, rearrange application windows, browse the Web, and control media playback. Two versions of Win&I are offered -- the home version goes for about 20 Euros, the business version for 40.

Anyone else having fun pretending his stance is a little "Iron Man"? We're tempted to put a repulsor on that hand.

Facebook launches unified mobile site, announces 250 million mobile users

Facebook has announced that its two mobile sites -- m.facebook.com and touch.facebook.com -- have been unified, bringing a simpler mobile experience to Facebook users. And there are a lot of those -- a quarter billion, according to Facebook.

Smartphone users won't be losing any functionality because of the consolidation. If your phone supported the enhacned features offered by touch.facebook.com, the new site will automatically flip the switch when you visit.

Rolling the sites together helps simplify things for Facebook's developer team. Now changes can be pushed to a single site instead of two separate sites, which makes it easier to ensure that all mobile users receive a nearly identical experience regardless of the device they're using.

The new Facebook mobile can also check to see if your phone supports geolocation. If it doesn't, you won't be seeing much of Facebook Places -- which obviously relies heavily on geolocation. Images can also be optimized on the fly to keep page performance from suffering on less powerful devices. You can see the three different versions of the share button below, courtesy our friends at TechCrunch.

CFO Defends Amazon From Analyst Skepticism

amazon logoInvestors seem pretty disappointed with Amazon's fourth quarter results (as of 3pm Pacific, the company's stock is down 8.6 percent in after-hours training), yet for most of this afternoon's analyst conference call, that disappointment was largely hidden in the normal stream of numbers and financial terminology. Finally, a few minutes before the call ended, one analyst asked CFO Tom Szkutak to directly address the concern that earlier questions had hinted at ? namely, that the company seems to be seeing "diminishing return" on its spending. Szutak's initial response? "I'm not sure how to answer that." Yes, he said Amazon is investing heavily (for example, hhe said Amazon had opened 17 fulfillment centers during the quarter, bringing the total to 69), but that's because the company is seeing so much growth ? in its own retail business, in fulfillment for third-party retailers, in Amazon Web Services, and so on. As evidence, he pointed to Amazon's 46 percent growth in overall unit sales. (He talked in more detail about media sales earlier in the call.)
