Pure intros the Contour 200i and Sensia 200D, we rock out with our hands on

It's the same old story -- a company coming to the States, attempting to make a splash in the US during the craziest tech week of the year. In the case of Pure, however, the company actually has some pretty cool looking products to show off.

Take the Contour 200i Air, a slick Airplay speaker system that offers up the same build quality as some of the pricier models in this space. We played with the device a bit, and have to say, the half-circle build really is quite nice. The speaker also has a bit of heft to it -- it's not really small by any stretch -- after all, the thing does have to support iPads, via the built-in dock in the front. It also gets fairly loud, though at higher volumes, the bass does tend to distort things, a fair bit. Look for it to hit the US around March for $329.

Also making its debut tonight is the oddly named Sensia 200D, a little football-shaped music system with a touch display on its front. Like the 200i, the Sensia feels like a solidly built product -- one with some weight to it. We fiddled around with the thing, a bit. The touchscreen wasn't quite as responsive as we liked, though that may have had something to do with the fact that the player really couldn't do much at the moment -- the company's network was down, and without connectivity, the thing is really just a pretty-looking paperweight.

When it does work, you can use the device to stream music from your home computer, listen to internet radio stations and use the Pure Music service, which the company promises will hit North America at some point this year. We'll be sure to put the thing through its paces at some time in the future, when the internet gods are smiling on us a bit more. The Sensia will run you $450 when it hits our shores in April.

Classic Shell now makes Internet Explorer 9 look like IE8

classic shell make windows 7 look like xp
If you used Windows XP for a long time (who didn't?), one of the biggest changes when moving to Windows 7 or Vista was the massively-altered Explorer. While the new Explorer introduces some useful new features, it also removed just as many -- which is where Classic Shell comes in!

We've covered Classic Shell before, but here's the crib note: Classic Shell restores almost every Windows XP-era Explorer feature. The best change, in our opinion, is the reemergence of the 'up' arrow, meaning you now navigate without using the Windows Vista/7 'breadcrumbs' address bar. The status bar yet again shows the total size of your selection, and -- praise be! -- the diabolical Windows 7 Copy File 'copy and replace?' dialog has been replaced with a Windows XP lookalike (image after the break).

New to the most recent version of Classic Shell is the ability to make IE9 look like IE8. With Classic Shell the title bar yet again has a caption, so you can see the full title of Web pages. The current security zone and loading progress indicator have been put back into the status bar, too. If you enable 'Show tabs on a separate row,' it's almost like using IE8.

Finally, Classic Shell replaces the omnipotent Windows 7 Start Menu with the age-old 'classic' Windows 2000/XP-style Start Menu. Classic Shell makes the Start Menu skinable, too, if you're into the kind of thing.

As awesome as it sounds, we've only touched on a small section of Classic Shell's feature set. Check the Classic Shell site for a complete list. There's a few more images of Classic Shell in action after the break.

Griffin AirCurve Window Mount hands-on (video)

Remember Griffin's AirCurve dock? Well, if you didn't, it was a big plastic funnel that you dropped your iPhone into to acoustically amplify the sound. Griffin's now mashing the same technology into its Window Mount to produce the AirCurve Window Mount: designed to enhance your iPhone's sound without power. You can check out our hands-on video after the break where we try it live: it made everything noticeably louder, but might not be the most beautiful sound you'll ever hear. It's available for $30 from this week and we've got pictures, so many beautiful pictures.

Firefox 4 rockets to 5% global usage share, IE9 wallows at 1.5%

Firefox 4 usage share graph
Using some early numbers from both StatCounter and Net Applications, Mozilla's noisiest hominid, Asa Dotzler, has illustrated Firefox 4's meteoric rise to around 5% of Web browser global usage share. Internet Explorer 9, which launched two weeks ago, seems to be enjoying a much more casual stroll in the park with just 1.5% of the global Web usage share.

Interestingly, we can see IE9 dipping between March 20 and 21, just before the 'Important' Windows Update rolled out. It's hard to say whether IE9 is only growing because of the installed-by-default Windows Update, but that small dip definitely sticks out -- did excitement peter out? Did people download IE9, try it out, and summarily uninstall it? Perhaps, given their close proximity, the stats show an attention shift from Microsoft to Mozilla?

Numbers-wise, if the bottom left corner of the graph shows 2.3 million downloads for IE9, we can guesstimate that that it has now been downloaded 5 million times. Firefox is clocking in at 37 million downloads after five days of public availability.

We wonder whether Microsoft knew its release schedule would coincide so closely with Firefox 4. Internet Explorer 9 -- a great browser by almost every metric -- was never going to do well against anything emanating from the maws of Mozilla. The main thing, though, is that Microsoft has now shown that it's serious when it comes to the Open Web. If Internet Explorer 10 is good, and 11 and 12, then we might finally see it compete with the zealous Mozillan horde.

Acer announces 1080p display quad-core Iconia tablet

Android Central

To kick off CES with style, Acer has announced that they will be bringing the next generation Iconia Tab with some impressive specs.  Bundled amidst the news of ultrabooks, Acer said that the next Iconia Tab will feature a 10.1-inch 1920x1080 (that's 1080p) display and feature a quad-core ARM processor.  The exact type of processor wasn't announced, but the NVIDIA Tegra 3 is a serious contender, as are the quad-core Qualcomm chips we're expecting to hear about this week at CES.  No mention of OS version, but we certainly expect it to be Ice Cream Sandwich.

1080p quad-core Android tablets?  Now we're talking.  Stay tuned for even more CES coverage, it's going to be a good week.

Why Bootstrapping Is Just As Over-Rated As Raising Venture Capital

bootEntrepreneurship requires balancing unbridled optimism with delusional foolishness.  Most entrepreneurs are mocked and misunderstood until they are wildly successful, at which point the chorus changes from ?good luck with that ?business?, pal? to ?I always believed in ya, buddy!? There is an undeniable appeal to the notion of bootsrapping your company to success without venture capital. While bootstrapping has many advantages aside from control and ownership?such as being master of your domain and giving you the freedom to build your own Xanadu for all stakeholders?the reality is that the disadvantages may be greater. I speak from experience, having bootstrapped my own company, WatchMojo.

Microsoft preparing to bring Xbox Live to Android?

Android Central

At this moment in time it's only our cousins over at WPCentral who get to enjoy the best Xbox Live mobile experience from Microsoft. But according to a recent job listing, that could be changing in the future.

The job posting itself requires 2 years of mobile application development, and more specifically experience of Windows Phone, iOS and Android being a big plus.

Is it that surprising really that Microsoft would want to get Xbox onto Android? Not hardly. Market share alone would sight that as a positive step, but it would be a bit of a kick to the Windows Phone platform. Either way until we see something on our Android devices we'll have to treat it with a pinch of salt, but there's a lot of people who'd be excited to see this.
