Windows 8 now available to OEMs via Microsoft Connect

windows 8Select Microsoft Connect partners -- major players like HP -- have been given their first taste of Windows 8. According to various sources, the build string currently sits at 7971.0.110324-1900, which is the third milestone build of the successor to Windows 7.

So far, there haven't been many details revealed about Windows 8. An actual System Restore -- which is being referred to as History Vault -- has been reported, and the feature will allow users and administrators to completely roll back a system to a previous state. A factory reset option is also said to be included.

We've also seen Windows Live integration taking shape on the desktop. It's believed that you'll be able to log in to Windows 8 using your Windows Live credentials, not just a traditional offline Windows username and password.

All that's left now is for a leaked Windows 8 build to show up on a torrent site. Feel free to tip us if you see that happen.

US Cellular launching its 4G LTE network in 2012 in six states

US Cellular

US Cellular this afternoon announced that it's launching a 4G LTE network in the first quarter of 2012, with select cities in six states getting the nod.

The markets that will initially have the LTE data, which is being provided in conjunction with King Street Wireless, are:

  • Wisconsin: Milwaukee, Madison and Racine
  • Iowa: Des Moines, Cedar Rapids and Davenport
  • Maine: Portland and Bangor
  • North Carolina: Greenville.

Oklahoma and Texas will see some 4G LTE coverage as well, but USCC didn't specify which cities. Specific devices were not announced, either, but we're more than willing to bet we'll see some Android fare. Check out the full press release after the break.

Ask DLS: What's your primary Web browser?

Competition is a good thing, and the browser arena has been a fierce arena for years now. There are at least four "major" browsers each vying for your attention, along with lots of smaller spin-offs (SRWare Iron or Flock, anyone?).

While the browser usage charts we share from time to time show overall browser usage amongst the Web at large, Download Squad readers are not exactly the average bunch in terms of browser use. So today we have one simple question for you:

What's your primary Web browser?

Pulp Fiction on Blu-ray Is Your Royale-With-Cheese Deal of the Day [Dealzmodo]

The best movie year of all time? Has to be 1994, right? It was ah-maze-balls. You have Lion King, the best Disney movie of all time. The Shawshank Redemption, another GOAT movie. Exemplary action flicks like Speed and True Lies. One of my favorite docs in Hoop Dreams. Dumb and Dumber, Clerks, The Mask, The Flintstones? oh my god, it keeps going! Forrest Gump, which I'm sad to hear that not everyone loved. Ed Wood, which more people should love. Middling sequels like D2, 3 Ninjas Kick Back and Land Before Time II. And of course, probably the best movie of them all, Pulp Fiction. You can get Pulp Fiction on Blu-Ray for 12 bucks and re-live 1994 all over again. It's better than watching movies from 2011, that's for sure. -CC More »

Arch Enemy : We Will Rise [Video]

I swear, nothing takes the edge off a long day at the grindstone better than a little Swedish Death-Metal. That's especially true when you've got some Arch Enemy on tap with stone-cold fox Angela Gossow growling out vocals. Oh, did I mention I'm a sucker for female leads? More »

Motorola announces Xoom 2 and Xoom 2 Media Edition, coming to UK and Ireland 'mid-November'

Android Central

We've seen the leaks and rumors, and now the Motorola Xoom 2 and Xoom 2 Media Edition are both officially official. The 10.1-inch Xoom 2 and its 8.2-inch media-focused sibling will go on sale in the UK and Ireland from mid-November, at retailers including the Carphone Warehouse, PC World and Dixons.

As far as specs go, it's pretty much what we expected -- both tablets feature some variety of 1.2 GHz dual-core CPU, alongside 1GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. Both flavors also ship with "HD" displays, which we're guessing will be your standard, Honeycomb-friendly 1280x800 panels. Speaking of Honeycomb, you've got Android 3.2 on-board, along with what looks like some minor UI tweaks from Motorola. So no Ice Cream Sandwich just yet, but then that's to be expected.

The tablets also sport the unique curved style edges that we'd seen in leaked photos, as well as phones like the Photon, and we're interested to see how this design choice works on a larger device. Weight-wise, the Xoom 2 sits at 599g, just four grams heavier than Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1, and two grams lighter than the iPad 2. The Media Edition, however, is significantly lighter, at 386 grams.

Moto's yet to mention any pricing information for the Xoom 2 series, nor when (or even if) it plans to release its two new tablets in the US. We'll keep you posted if we hear anything. In the meantime, hit the jump for today's announcement video, or use one of the links below to take a closer look at both Xoom 2 models.

CBS boss reveals why the company is 'against joining Apple TV' (or Hulu)

There's been a fresh round of "Apple is building a TV" rumors lately, and now comments by CBS CEO Les Moonves during his company's earnings call may reveal more about what Cupertino would like to do. Many of the rumors are based on quotes by Steve Jobs in his biography that he "cracked" a way to make an integrated TV set that was easier to use -- a major jump from the current Apple TV add-on box. While responding to analyst questions about why CBS isn't on Hulu, Moonves mentioned the network did not join in "Apple TV" for the same reason: because it (like Hulu) was an advertiser split.

As we've discussed at length on the podcast, any efforts to remake how the TV business works won't get far without content, and so far CBS and its fellow studios have not been interested in playing ball. Why is that? According to Moonves, current deals (with cable and satellite, for example) are worth "hundreds and hundreds of millions" in guaranteed cash payments, and rather than seeking a share of advertising down the road, he thinks a "guaranteed revenue stream is a good way to go." Hit the source link to read the full transcript at Seeking Alpha or check after the break to read his words for yourself. It's a revealing look at why the potential task left to Tim Cook (or his counterparts at Google, Microsoft, and wherever else) of negotiating a new business model for home video may be even harder to crack than designing the perfect UI.
