Dark Sky Predicts the Exact Weather, One Hour Ahead

Dark Sky is a weather app that only tells you what will happen in the next hour, at most. What’s the point of that, you ask? Because by limiting itself to what will happen next, Dark Sky can be spookily accurate. The app, by Adam Grossman and Jack Turner, analyses weather radar data and tells you [...]

HTC EVO Design 4G hands-on

HTC EVO Design 4G

I've got to hand it to HTC. They continue to make beautiful-looking devices, one after another, with nary an end in sight. The latest in their lineup is the EVO Design 4G, a solid, mid-range phone that carries Sprint's EVO branding.

At first glance it looks like, well, an EVO. Not quite big enough to be the original EVO 4G and not as bulky as the current EVO 3D, the Design 4G is the thinner, lighter sibling in the EVO line. And that's ok.

The aluminum unibody design is one of the best features about this phone, not just aesthetically, but because it keeps everything feeling solid while still unbelievably light. If HTC could pull it off, I'd hope to see more phones (and more powerful phones) come out with this design more often.

The 4-inch screen is bright and clean, and doesn't leave much to be desired. Because the screen is more convervatively sized, the phone itself feels great in the hand and doesn't require any of the awkward thumb/palm shifts larger phones do.

The 1.2GHz processor gets the job done, but there's still mad lag when the phone's first turning on. That's no surprise, and I'm glad to see "less powerful" phones that still run really well. (Remember when a 1.2GHz processor was the deal?)

There's not much more I can say right now, so I'll just leave you guys (and gals) with a whole bevy of shots and a hands-on video after the break.

Warpia's StreamHD Value Edition does wireless USB to HDMI on the (kinda) cheap

Warpia StreamHD Value Edition
Were you intrigued by Warpia's StreamHD, but turned off by its $170 price? Well maybe the new Value Edition (or VE to the cool kids) will make you crack open that piggy bank. At $130 we still wouldn't call the StreamHD VE an impulse purchase, but it's certainly not a budget buster. In the package is the same USB adapter, a wireless receiver and an A/V base with an HDMI out -- and the company still throws in an HDMI cable to boot. What do you lose to land that $40 discount? Well 5.1 surround sound for one. There's no S/PDIF out and only stereo audio is supported over HDMI. The A/V dock also cuts out the 3.5mm audio out jack, but chances are you weren't using it anyway. Check out the complete PR and one more pic after the break.

TripAdvisor app for Windows Phone 7 now available

tripadvisor windows phone 7TripAdvisor, the popular travel planning tool, has just launched an app for Windows Phone 7. Just like the mobile website, the app allows you to search for anything travel-related -- from hotels and flights to restaurants and points-of-interest to visit once you reach your destination.

Geolocation is supported, which allows TripAdvisor to quickly locate places nearby. But while that's a neat feature, it's also a bit of a downer -- because, really, it's about the only feature TripAdvisor for WP7 brings to the table that its mobile Web app doesn't already offer (its browser-based geolocation doesn't work with WP7 at the moment).

While it's nice to see Windows Phone 7 users getting some big-name apps, it'd be even nicer if we saw some packing a bit more swagger.

Still, TripAdvisor for WP7 might just be worth installing on your device if you're frequently on the go -- at least until a better browser arrives with the Mango update.

Microsoft Video Envisions a Touch-Based Future

How do you see yourself living a decade from now? For many of us, it's difficult to picture how technologies will change and evolve in that time span. But for some folks at Microsoft, it's their job to figure out where technology is headed, and how to make it happen. And a recently released video shows just what they envision.

Add a Windows 8 user tile to your Windows 7 taskbar

Now that Windows 8 images have begun leaking out, it's only a matter of time until developers start releasing mods for Windows 7 which mimic upcoming features. Over at Into Windows, they've spotted one such mod already.

In the earliest Windows 8 images, we saw Windows Live integration on the taskbar. In the far right corner, there's a user tile displayed. If you'd like to do the same on Windows 7, download Taskbar User Tile from DeviantArt user AngelWZR.

Once installed, your current picture will appear on the taskbar. Click it, and a menu appears which allows you to log off, switch users, and access the control panel. Right now, the mod only works if your taskbar is displayed on the bottom of your Windows desktop.

Codecademy Raises $2.5 Million To Teach You How To Code

codecademyshotThe term "hot startup" gets bandied about pretty frequently. But there are few companies it applies to more than Codecademy, a startup which, of all things, teaches you how to program. Today, the company is announcing that it's raised $2.5 million from an all-star roster to continue that mission. The $2.5 million funding round was led by Union Square Ventures, with participation from O'Reilly AlphaTech, Thrive Capital, SV Angel, Yuri Milner, Social + Capital Partnership (Chamath Palihapitiya), Founder Collective (Chris Dixon), CrunchFund, Collaborative Fund (Craig Shapiro),Joshua Schacter, Vivi Nevo, Dave Morin, Sam Altman, Ruchi Sanghvi & Aditya Agarwal, and Naval Ravikant. It also includes GroupMe founders Jared Hecht and Steve Martocci ? which is notable because Codecademy cofounder Zach Sims was a GroupMe employee shortly before leaving to help start Codecademy.
