PSX games now available in the Android Market, if you own an Xperia Play

PlayStation One games on the Android Market
If you're lucky enough to own an Xperia Play -- Sony Ericsson's new Gingerbread-powered smartphone-cum-gamepad -- you can now buy PlayStation (PSX) titles from the Android Market.

There are five titles currently available, all priced at £3.99: Syphon Filter, MediEvil, Cool Boarders 2, Destruction Derby, and Jumping Flash. They don't have an American price yet, but that will surely change once the Xperia Play launches in the States.

Two important questions remain unanswered: How big are these games? The Market descriptions say the games are only 5MB, but that sounds incredibly unlikely -- and more importantly, will it be possible to 'spoof' the Xperia Play and download PSX games onto other Gingerbread-powered phones, like the Nexus S?

In other news, the PlayStation emulator PSX4droid was recently removed from the Android Market. This obviously has nothing to do with today's release of first-party PlayStation games.

Chrome 11 beta adds new experimental APIs for proxies, Web navigation

google chrome 11 proxy
Google Chrome 11 -- which just recently made the move to the browser's beta channel -- has received a minor update that gives developers access to two new APIs.

The first is a full-featured proxy API, which will, for example, allow users to set different proxy servers for normal browsing and Incognito mode. Proxy auto-config scripts are also supported by the API.

The second -- Web Navigation Extension -- is a bit more expansive. This API will allow devs to build everything from more powerful safe browsing extensions -- like Traffic Light -- to data analysis and reporting extensions.

Both APIs are currently experimental, so you'll need to enable them on the about:flags page to try out any relevant extensions. Apart from a proxy example built by Google and shipped with the Chromium source, we're not aware of any examples just yet, however. We'll let you know when we spot any slick, new extensions which do surface.

webOS 3.0 beta now available to developers

hp touchpad webos 3.0
With the webOS 3.0 SDK available for almost two months, HP has now given developers access to a beta download of webOS 3.0 -- which powers the upcoming TouchPad and will likely ride along on HP desktops and laptops in the form of an emulator.

Right now, the webOS 3.0 beta is only available to Early Access developers. The crew at PreCentral states that HP appears to have eased up on access restrictions, however, so hopefully more devs will get on board and those of you who are planning to buy a TouchPad in the next couple months will have plenty of slick webOS 3.0 apps to install on your new tablet.

Pastebin updated to V3, releases Windows app

pastebin
Pastebin is a very popular website aimed at coders and other nerdy types, which allows them (or should I say, us) to paste and share snippets of code with lovely syntax highlighting.

It has recently undergone a major overhaul which includes the release of a brand new Windows client. The new client lets you create new "pastes" and manage your existing ones. It joins a host of other tools from Pastebin, such as the Google and Chrome extensions, OS X widget and the mobile apps.

If you're currently using Pastebin, the new client is a great addition. And if you haven't tried it before, next time you have a piece of code you want to share or get some feedback on, you could do worse than try out Pastebin.

[Thanks, Jeroen!]

VMware adds Mozy to its cloud and virtualization empire

mozy vmware
Mozy is one of the most popular cloud backup services around, with more than one million users storing around 70 petabytes of data. Its popularity apparently put it on the acquisition radar of VMware -- which has now made Mozy part of its virtualization empire.

VMware's official blog post makes it clear that the company wasn't so much interested in Mozy as a consumer offering. Rather, it's the inner workings of Mozy which piqued VMware's curiosity. CTO Steve Herrod says, "Over the past 5 years, Mozy has built one of the best examples of a globally distributed, large-scale cloud offering." He adds that the move will allow VMware to "further ramp our own cloud-related learning and accelerate new IP, scale, and capabilities" of its existing offerings.

Existing Mozy customers don't need to worry, of course. VMware has pledged to continue running Mozy's service without interruption.

Samsung's Galaxy Nexus signup sheet shows 7 US carriers

Galaxy nexus

All kidding and interweb trolling aside, nobody really thinks the Galaxy Nexus will be a Verizon exclusive.  But the site to register for more information does have something there few were expecting -- the Galaxy Nexus looks to be launching on more than just the big four in the US.  Besides Verizon, we see listings you would have imagined, like Sprint, T-Mobile and AT&T, as well as a few others -- Cellular South, Metro PCS, and US Cellular.

A Nexus phone on every major US carrier?  Who would have imagined that two years ago.  Nice work Google and Samsung, let's hope it's not a misprint or typo.  We'll be on the lookout for individual carrier announcements in the coming days and weeks.

With Social, Sergey Brin And Vic Gundotra Say Google Is Playing A Different Game

IMG_2405Google founder Sergey Brin freely admits, "I am not a very social person myself." Speaking onstage at the Web 2.0 Summit with Google+ exec Vic Gundotra, Brin says that he thought Google+ would be too complicated, with all of its Circles and different ways to share with different groups of people. But he has been pleasantly surprised. "I have been able to reconnect with friends, I was not able to do that with existing services because of the way their sharing models work. The Circles worked very well for me, I debated they were too complicated. Now I use them." But of course he does. What about regular people? As Sean Parker pointed out on Monday, all of your friends are already on Facebook and it will be hard to get all of them to move over to Google+. "Your mom and friends, guess what, they are already on Google," responds Gundotra. Google will get them to use Google+ overtime.

Cut Your Energy Costs with The Sauer Vertical-Axis Wind Turbine ? and Win a Vespa Scooter from Sauer and The Gadgeteer!

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Sauer Energy. All opinions are 100% mine. HTC releases kernel source for myTouch 4G Slide, Desire Gingerbread, and Raider 4G

HTC open source

HTC has (finally) released the GPL kernel source for the myTouch 4G Slide, and they have tossed in the Gingerbread update kernel source for the Desire, and the code for the Raider 4G (Korea) kernel.  It's a case of better late than never, and I know more than a few developers have been waiting for that Doubleshot kernel source code.  Let the CM7 games begin.

Most of us won't be in any rush to grab these, but developers have been waiting so they can work their magic with it.  Give them a few days then be ready to have a flash-fest.  If you're interested or a developer, grab them at the source link.

Instapaper gets iPad refresh: more friends, more reading

Instapaper, the internet equivalent of a bookmark, has been given a top-to-toe makeover for its latest outing on the iPad. Fear not, your reading materials remain easy to read (and ad-free), but version 4 has now been smoothed over with a thick layer of tablet gloss. Navigation is all done through a bar on the left, and remains available for prodding as you read through your article selection. The upgrade also adds a subscription option for searching all your previous reads, as well as better social skills, with the ability to pick up and store articles and posts shared by your Twitter buddies -- ensuring that you'll probably never run out of reading material again.
