Drobo's new 5N is a speedy $600 NAS for when you need files, stat

Drobo

Tragically, we only learned about Drobo's new 5N after we'd hired a warehouse the size of an aircraft hanger to store our latest, 12 million page novel. If you want to avoid our mistake, then the company's latest NAS might end your own storage woes. The new hardware is part of the same family as the 5D and Drobo Mini, except this one ditches the Thunderbolt connection in favor of a single gigabit-ethernet port. Inside, there's space for five 3.5-inch drives, giving you a maximum capacity of 20TB. An mSATA slot for an SSD drive will let you make use of Drobo's "data-aware tiering" feature, which gives applications like Adobe Lightroom and iTunes faster access to your NAS-stored files. The base model will set you back $600 and will be available in "mid December," which we impatiently hope is a euphemism for "tomorrow."

Ask DLS: What's your primary Web browser?

Competition is a good thing, and the browser arena has been a fierce arena for years now. There are at least four "major" browsers each vying for your attention, along with lots of smaller spin-offs (SRWare Iron or Flock, anyone?).

While the browser usage charts we share from time to time show overall browser usage amongst the Web at large, Download Squad readers are not exactly the average bunch in terms of browser use. So today we have one simple question for you:

What's your primary Web browser?

Chrome 11 beta adds new experimental APIs for proxies, Web navigation

google chrome 11 proxy
Google Chrome 11 -- which just recently made the move to the browser's beta channel -- has received a minor update that gives developers access to two new APIs.

The first is a full-featured proxy API, which will, for example, allow users to set different proxy servers for normal browsing and Incognito mode. Proxy auto-config scripts are also supported by the API.

The second -- Web Navigation Extension -- is a bit more expansive. This API will allow devs to build everything from more powerful safe browsing extensions -- like Traffic Light -- to data analysis and reporting extensions.

Both APIs are currently experimental, so you'll need to enable them on the about:flags page to try out any relevant extensions. Apart from a proxy example built by Google and shipped with the Chromium source, we're not aware of any examples just yet, however. We'll let you know when we spot any slick, new extensions which do surface.

Verizon Galaxy Note 2 bootloader unlock now available

Verizon Galaxy Note 2

Well that certainly didn't take very long. The folks over at XDA, as they like to do, have unlocked the Verizon Galaxy Note 2 bootloader. You'll need to jump through a few hoops and have some patience to get through it all, but if you're willing to do it there's a pretty granular walkthrough at the source link below. Before you do, remember to hack at your own risk -- bad things can happen when you start messing around with this stuff.

Unlocking the bootloader still won't get rid of that big 'ol Verizon logo on the home button, though. You'll need a sticker for that job.

TweetDeck for the web and Chrome gains ability to embed tweets, not much else

Tweetdeck for the web and Chrome gains ability to embed tweets, not much else

TweetDeck today announced a new feature that may not nab it any design or productivity awards, but, still, it'll surely be appreciated by some power users of the Twitter-owned client. And while the ability to embed tweets isn't exactly novel at this point (Twitter's had it for many months), it's still nice to now have the option present on both the web and Chrome versions of the application -- which, in turn, should make it easier to insert select snippets from the Blue Bird social network into your personal website or blog. Besides the "Embed this Tweet," TweetDeck didn't make any other additions, though the service did make it clear that it spends "a lot of time improving TweetDeck for a large consumption of Tweets, as this is one of the core uses of the product." Onto the next one then.

Buy themed gift sets for friends and family this Holiday season with Sesame for iPhone

Shopping for gifts for friends and family for the Holidays is hard work because not only is it time consuming, but finding gifts that aren't boring or lame is quite a challenge -- and that's where Sesame come's in. Sesame by Sincerely Ink is a boutique gift shop in your pocket that has beautiful and interesting gift sets already created and ready to purchase. These sets include things like everything needed for a relaxing spa day at home, family game night goodies, and an infant starter kit.

Not only is Sesame extremely convenient, but it's also beautiful. The gift sets are displayed as square photo with the set name, who it was created by, and the price dog-eared in the corner. When you tap on a gift set, you can scroll through the photos of items included in the set at the top of the screen and read more information about the set. There will be a note from the creator (sometimes a vendor, sometimes a "regular" person) about the gifts and why they make a great set, a list of everything included, who it's perfect for, and a section "About the Creator".

If you find a gift set you like, you can share it to Facebook, Twitter, or Email. If you purchase a gift set, it will be hand prepared in a beautiful box, wrapped in white tissue paper, and nestled in craft crinkle. You can also personalize a card to be included with the gift.

If you are the recipient of a gift set from Sesame, there is a section of the app that lets you scan the stamp inside your card to thank your sender or send them a gift or card.

There are currently 13 different gift sets in the Sesame app and new ones will be added each month.

I'm very impressed with the design of Sesame and think the gift sets included are great. I'm the least creative person when it comes to gift-giving, so there's a good chance I'll ended up choosing one of these gift sets as a gift for someone or at least get inspiration to design my own.
