Glide, a San Francisco institution that's one of the city's best-known churches, is launching online campaign that will give 10 people the chance to meet with Floodgate's Mike Maples, Google Ventures' Kevin Rose, Eric Ries, Four-Hour Work Week author Tim Ferriss, and Relay Ventures partner John Occhipinti.

Google's Retiring Sync and Other Services In This Year's Winter Cleaning

It's that time of year again; Google's leading its ostensibly lonely and unloved services out to pasture. This time Google Sync, and some more obscure calender options are headed for that big cloud storage unit in the sky. More »

These Iconic L.L. Bean Boots Are Your Winter-Is-Coming Deal of the Day

Eddard Stark, the world's worst weatherman, probably has some really nice boots. He certainly has a sweet sword, passed down for hundreds of years. Here in North America, the Bean Boots are the closest thing to a Stark heirloom you're going to find. L.L. Bean is from Maine, which is the Winterfell of the United States, and they've been making these boots in an essentially unchanged design since 1912. Plus, they come with a lifetime warranty. That warranty isn't a joke; I've had three different pairs of Bean Boots (I'm really hard on shoes) and every time they've been replaced by L.L. Bean, no questions asked. On the other side of durability, my mother's been wearing the same pair (labeled Maine Hunting Shoe) for 30 years. More »

Cueboy Quest is an adorable 8-bit style physics game

cueboyquest
Yes, that's right, I said adorable. Because Cueboy Quest really is!

You play an 8-bit cowboy whose goal on each level is to get to the door (and thus to the next level), but the door is often locked. To get it to open, you must shoot at one or more targets, and those targets aren't always in your line of sight. For example, on one level the the target is a balloon which is stuck all the way at the other end of the screen. You must first nudge it free, and then watch it float up and try to shoot it before it floats clear off the screen. Your bullets are chunky pixels that have some weight - the have arcing trajectories, so you don't always hit exactly where you aim.

There's another level where you must jump on the balloon as it floats up, use it as a platform to get to the other end of the screen, and then turn to shoot it very quickly before it flies away. Each level is very short, and most of them are quite easy. And not only are the graphics 8-bit blocky, but they're large too. Simply beautiful!

Windows 8 to feature adaptive Aero colorization, get it now on Windows 7

windows 8 aero colorization aura
While we've still yet to see anything truly Earth-shattering, the tandem of Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott continues to churn out insight about interesting new features they've discovered in Windows 8 milestone 3. The latest discovery is that Aero in Windows 8 will be able to automatically adapt itself to match your current wallpaper image. It's a bit like what Windows 7 already does with your taskbar icons: if a program alert needs your attention, the icon will glow using the predominant color (e.g. Firefox should glow orange).

And yes, you can already make Windows 7 behave this way if you like. Over at CodePlex, there's a little program called Aura that parks itself in your system tray and automatically adjusts your window borders to compliment your wallpaper images. The effect is quite nice, and you can try it out by minimizing your windows and cycling through your theme's wallpapers (right click on your desktop and choose next desktop background).

How Effective is the iPad as a Business Tool?

Right from the start the iPad was marketed as one of the best unique devices to be launched on the market. It’s screen size and ability to render amazing images as well as it’s great video playback lives up to this claim. However, there is more to the iPad than just this because the device offers business-savvy users some very interesting apps they can really benefit from. Although Apple is pretty independent, it does however, have in-built support for Microsoft [...]

Insert Coin: MeterPlug estimates electricity costs per device, aims to save you some cash

Decking out homes with smartphone-controlled appliances and using gadgets to keep tabs on electricity usage isn't exactly new, but the MeterPlug thinks it can do a better job of tracking exactly how much dough your devices are burning in electricity. The plastic dongle plugs in-between an outlet and a device, and leverages a database of electricity prices based on location and time of day to calculate how much an appliance drains from your wallet per hour, day, week, month and year. With the help of Bluetooth, MeterPlug slings data to an Android or iOS app, and shoots updated meter information -- stored inside built-in memory -- as you come into range. Sure, Bluetooth connectivity only allows for connected devices within 100 feet to be manually switched on and off through the app, but it also gives users the option of proximity control. MeterPlug can cut power to whatever is jacked in as users wander away, and restore juice when they walk back into range.

IE9 and Firefox 4 post top marks in Web browser power use comparison

Over on the Internet Explorer Blog, Microsoft has posted results from an extensive comparison of the top five Web browsers. The goal: to determine whether Internet Explorer 9, Firefox 4, Chrome 10, Safari 5, or Opera 11 is able to squeeze the most life out of your laptop's battery.

A baseline was determined with test systems sitting idle, and then browsers were pointed at about:blank, a news site, the HTML5 Galactic demo, and the IE9 fish tank demo. Perhaps unsurprisingly, IE9 came out on top -- though Firefox 4 was a very close second on nearly every test. As you can see, the other browsers didn't necessarily fare quite as well, with Google Chrome, Safari, and Opera all posting significantly worse scores. In Opera 11's case, a laptop battery would last over one hour more with Internet Explorer 9 installed.

But what we'd really like to know is where did Microsoft find the dilithium crystals required to run a Galactic Total Power Consumption test...

?Google For Entrepreneurs? Program Partners With Korean Accelerator Kstartup

kstartupSeoul-based accelerator Kstartup just announced that it's partnering with the Google for Entrepreneurs program. In fact, according to Kstartup co-founder and partner David Lee, this is Google's first such partnership in Asia. Lee was an early Googler (one of the first 200 employees), as well as a partner at SK Telecom Ventures and co-founder of XG Ventures. (He's not the David Lee at SV Angel.) Through the partnership, he said, Google will provide an undisclosed amount of funding and other resources to help with Kstartup's operations. It's a three-month program that happens twice a year, providing free office space in the Gangnam district ("Psy not included"), as well as business and technical mentorship. Lee said he's also raising a fund to make seed investments in the Kstartup companies, but that's separate from the Google partnership.

Google Chrome and Chromium add protection against malicious downloads

google chrome malicious download
Google Chrome already sports a number of security-minded features, from Incognito mode to a software sandbox which makes exploiting the browser a Herculean task. Now, Google has announced additional protection for Chromium and Chrome users.

Built upon the Safe Browsing API, the new feature introduces protection against malicious downloads. If a download link appears in the Safe Browsing blacklist, Chrome and Chromium will warn users against downloading -- a save button is still presented, of course, in case you're convinced a file is perfectly safe to download.

We'd like to see something a bit more eye-catching than the red warning icon -- like perhaps painting the entire bar red. Many of the people a feature like this aims to protect probably won't notice the icon or change in wording as they'll be focused on clicking the save button.

Google is initially making download protection available to Chrome dev channel users, and you'll likely see it in Canary and Chromium snapshot builds as well. After thorough testing, beta and stable users will be next in line.
