Windows 8 now available to OEMs via Microsoft Connect

windows 8Select Microsoft Connect partners -- major players like HP -- have been given their first taste of Windows 8. According to various sources, the build string currently sits at 7971.0.110324-1900, which is the third milestone build of the successor to Windows 7.

So far, there haven't been many details revealed about Windows 8. An actual System Restore -- which is being referred to as History Vault -- has been reported, and the feature will allow users and administrators to completely roll back a system to a previous state. A factory reset option is also said to be included.

We've also seen Windows Live integration taking shape on the desktop. It's believed that you'll be able to log in to Windows 8 using your Windows Live credentials, not just a traditional offline Windows username and password.

All that's left now is for a leaked Windows 8 build to show up on a torrent site. Feel free to tip us if you see that happen.

Toyota pulls Cydia theme and ads to appease Apple

Apple asks Toyota to remove jailbreak Cydia theme
In news that will no doubt shake the very bedrock of your belief system, Apple has asked Toyota to remove its Scion theme and its advertising from ModMyi, a Cydia repository. The Scion theme has been available for weeks, but after it received a ton of press in the last couple of days, Apple finally lashed out.

It's not like we should be surprised, considering Apple has claimed in the past that jailbreaking is illegal -- but at the same time, did the Cupertino cronies hear about the ruling that made circumventing DRM, and thus jailbreaking, legal? Anyway, whether Toyota was supporting illegal, legal, or deliciously gray and ambiguous, activity, it doesn't matter: Apple asked Toyota to remove the theme, and Toyota graciously bent over and capitulated.

This story raises a much more interesting topic, though: this is the first time a multinational company has publicly acknowledged and embraced the jailbreak community. Considering jailbreaking is technically legal, and Cydia's creator, Jay Freeman, estimates that up to 9% of OS devices are jailbroken, it simply makes good, commercial sense to target jailbreakers with ads. Toyota was simply trying to make some money, for shame!

As long as Apple continues to throw around its increasingly-expansive mass, the legality of jailbreaking will continue to be inconsequential. It will be interesting to see if another big company dares embrace the jailbreak community after this, too.

Google Cloud Print comes to HP ePrint printers

hp google cloud print
HP has become the first major OEM to deliver support for Google Cloud Print in retail-boxed printers. In an official release, HP announced that its ePrint-enabled printers are now fully Cloud Print compatible. Just sign in to your Google account, pick your HP ePrint device, and you're ready to fire off a print job from anywhere you've got Internet access. Well, as long as your app supports Cloud Print as well -- like Gmail and Google Docs, for example.

We're curious, though -- how many of you are still printing? Like our pals at Engadget, our printers have been mostly gathering dust for the last few years.

Let it Slide is an engaging, difficult puzzle game

letitslide
I have a thing for physics games, and I've been known to post the occasional platformer or action game here and there. But Let it Slide is one of the brainiest games I've posted to date.

The idea is very simple, and far from original: You get a board with pieces arranged in a particular pattern; you have to slide those around until you get the special piece into its target location.

It's not even about finding out where the target location is - you can just hover over "dim tiles" and instantly see where you're supposed to bring the special piece. But getting it there is a whole different story.

There are five tutorial levels, which I strongly recommend you do. Then there are twenty "beginner" levels, but that's really a misnomer. If those are the beginner levels, I don't want to know what the intermediate and advanced levels look like!

Every time you finish a level you get a score based on how many clicks it took you - each level has a "par" (the minimum number of clicks it could be completed in), and your performance is compared to that gold standard. Because it's such a brainy game, getting it right is quite satisfying. I was downright proud of myself when I managed to finish a few levels. All in all, quite recommended, especially if you've got a few minutes of quiet. It might actually help you focus better later on.

MB&F?s New Lamborghini-Inspired Watch Is Beautiful, And ?Relatively? Affordable (But Still $63K)

MBF-HM5-Watch-1If you're into drooling over watches that you'll likely never be able to afford (and I am), then you'll probably recognize the name MB&F (Max Busser & Friends). The boutique watch-maker has created some stunners, including the HM3 special edition profiled by contributor Ariel Adams last May. While that watch retailed for $93,000, the HM5 Adams shows off on his own site today retails for a much more affordable $63,000, putting it still far, far beyond my grasping claws.

Me In My Place web app update brings the sexy back to Android [#NSFW]

MIMP

When we last left Me in My Place, the photography series had just launched a web app that ... was a bit lacking on our Android devices. Great for iOS. Bad for us. No longer. The web app has undergone quite the overhaul, and we're happy to report it's working beautifully on Chrome.

What's the big deal? It's tough to read through Esquire magazine without seeing shots from the series' semi-mysterious mastermind, Michael Edwards, and MIMP (as it's known on the street) has come to have quite the following over the past couple years.

MIMP is a fun and flirty series, with the occasional celebrity mixed in among the less famous (but no less gorgeous) women from throughout the U.S. -- and more recently from around the world. The photography is casual, but still extremely professional. The MIMP website (based on Tumblr) believe it or not is the tame version. The web app is where things get a little more NSFW, but still with the same amount of class and respect you've come to expect.

Why shell out $15 a year (or $4.99 a month if you're not into saving money) for access to the MIMP web app? For one, I like supporting semi-indy projects like this. For another, this is a really good web app update, showing what can be done outside of a native application. A slideshow mechanism has been added, along with forward and back controls, and the ability to share individual pictures on Twitter. Plus, you can view hundreds of exclusive pictures on your Android phone and tablet. So there's that.

Check it out at app.meinmyplace.com.

Zoho Docs 2.0 adds iPad support

zoho docs ipad
Zoho has offered an iOS app for a while now -- at least for the iPhone and iPod touch. Those of you who have been wanting to use the Zoho app on your iPad were out of luck, but that's no longer the case.

Zoho Docs 2.0 has landed in the App Store, and the most notable change is that it's now a universal app. Now you're able to take advantage of the app's mobile productivity powers on your larger iOS device. Retina display support has also been added, as have document sharing options -- which you can utilize in both the viewer and collaboration modes.

Just like the basic Zoho service, the app is available totally free of charge. Paid subscriptions get you additional storage space and start at $3 per month for professional use.

How to fix auto-brightness issues with iOS 6

Ambient light sensor readings got quite a bit of an overhaul in iOS 6, and now include Lock screen auto-brightness and better memory management. This has lead to many people experiencing issues with auto-brightness settings. iPhone 5 users in particular seem to be having trouble. If your auto-brightness isn't working under iOS 6, here's how to reset it and get it back in gear.

  1. Go into a dimly lit or dark room.
  2. Launch the Settings app from the Home screen of your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
  • Tap on Brightness & Wallpaper.
  • Turn the auto-brightness setting to Off.
  • Adjust the brightness slider to the level you would like your screen brightness to be at in the given environment. For instance, if you're in a completely dark room, you'll probably want to put the slider all the way to low or pretty close to all the way down.
  • Turn the auto-brightness setting to On again.
  • Now flip on a light switch.
  • Watch the brightness slider move upwards to adjust to the new light entering the sensor.
  • As long as the brightness slider is moving on its own, you have successfully re-calibrated the sensor and it should work properly from here on out.
