Banshee music player now works in Windows, supports Amazon MP3 downloads

A few moments ago, version 2 of the Banshee music player for Linux was released, bringing with it a whole slew of new features, and the addition of an official -- but alpha-quality -- Windows build. The Mac OS X build of version 2 is due later today.

The most notable new feature is support for the Amazon MP3 store -- you can buy and download music from within Banshee -- but unfortunately it's only available in the Linux build at the moment (OS X and Windows support are planned, however). There have also been some significant improvements to artist, album, and queue interactions -- and yes, you can finally right click a track, album or artist and select 'play after' to insert it into the queue.

Beyond actual playback, the user interface has been tidied up -- it now looks a whole lot smarter -- and the Ubuntu One Music Store and SoundMenu extensions have been made official. For a complete list of changes, additions and bug fixes, check the change log.

When Windows support initially appeared in February, we found it rough around the edges and fraught with stability issues. With version 2, Banshee for Windows is still a bit unstable, but it's shaping up to be a good alternative to Winamp, iTunes, or whatever other music library manager you use. It's almost as attractive as its GNOMEish brother, too!

Firefox 4 rockets to 5% global usage share, IE9 wallows at 1.5%

Firefox 4 usage share graph
Using some early numbers from both StatCounter and Net Applications, Mozilla's noisiest hominid, Asa Dotzler, has illustrated Firefox 4's meteoric rise to around 5% of Web browser global usage share. Internet Explorer 9, which launched two weeks ago, seems to be enjoying a much more casual stroll in the park with just 1.5% of the global Web usage share.

Interestingly, we can see IE9 dipping between March 20 and 21, just before the 'Important' Windows Update rolled out. It's hard to say whether IE9 is only growing because of the installed-by-default Windows Update, but that small dip definitely sticks out -- did excitement peter out? Did people download IE9, try it out, and summarily uninstall it? Perhaps, given their close proximity, the stats show an attention shift from Microsoft to Mozilla?

Numbers-wise, if the bottom left corner of the graph shows 2.3 million downloads for IE9, we can guesstimate that that it has now been downloaded 5 million times. Firefox is clocking in at 37 million downloads after five days of public availability.

We wonder whether Microsoft knew its release schedule would coincide so closely with Firefox 4. Internet Explorer 9 -- a great browser by almost every metric -- was never going to do well against anything emanating from the maws of Mozilla. The main thing, though, is that Microsoft has now shown that it's serious when it comes to the Open Web. If Internet Explorer 10 is good, and 11 and 12, then we might finally see it compete with the zealous Mozillan horde.

The new Star Trek Into Darkness app gives exclusive access to content and Starfleet Academy

Star Trek app

If you're counting down the days until J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek Into Darkness” opens in theaters, there's a new app in Google Play you'll want to give a look. Simply titled the Star Trek App, you'll be presented with missions to complete, and as a reward you'll get exclusive access to special content upon completing them.

The missions involve things like virtual scavenger hunts -- where you scan photos or other imagery, use audio, or are location aware. These use the latest tech from Qualcomm, such as the Qualcomm Labs’ Gimbal platform and Qualcomm Vuforia augmented reality tool. The Start Trek App is one of the first commercially released app to use these platforms, which we first heard about at CES.

In addition, users will have access to the latest news about the upcoming film, and be able to have assets like video, wallpapers, and images delivered directly to their device. The app is free, runs on Froyo or higher, and you can download it at the Google Play link above. The full press release is after the break.

Windows Home Server 2011 released to manufacturers

windows home server 2011 whs
Just a little under two months after its release candidate went live, Windows Home Server (WHS) 2011 has been finalized and released into the wild. The new version of Microsoft's slick, do-it-all server OS is a big step forward from its predecessor.

Built on the Windows Server 2008 R2 base, Home Server 2011 features a simpler dashboard, a better backup solution, dead simple remote access to your home computers, and Silverlight-powered remote media streaming. For a more detailed look at what's new in Windows Home Server 2011, you check out Microsoft's official breakdown.

Drive Extender, of course, didn't resurface for the final release of WHS 2011 and that's something a lot of power users are still pretty irked about. Even without Extender, Windows Home Server offers a boatload of useful functionality and might be a good fit for your home network. Manufacturers have already begun building hardware, so you should be able to pick up a device in the very near future.

An evaluation download for Windows Home Server 2011 will be made available in April -- we'll let you know when the links are ready.

Scientists Have Created Crystals That Are Almost Alive

Man-made life is a thing of fiction, relegated to things like Frankenstein. But scientists are coming close to something almost like it. New light-affected crystals developed by scientists at New York University are very close to being alive, so close it makes you question what "being alive" really means. More »

Official Star Trek Into Darkness app wants you to scan the sights and sounds of Trek

Official Star Trek Into Darkness app wants you to scan the sights and sounds of Trek

Official movie tie-in apps are a dime-a-dozen these days, with every film studio looking to every avenue possible to promote their multi-million-dollar blockbusters. The latest is for the upcoming Star Trek Into Darkness, which while not due in theaters until May of this year, has launched an app that attempts to draw you deeper into the the J.J. Abrams Star Trek universe. Or at least the promotions for the film.

To boot, Star Trek App, as it's listed in the App Store, exists for you to scan released promotional photos and the audio of the two already released trailers. Scanning these things gets you points (typically 20 points per scan), which total up to slowly move you up a ranks and rewards chain. Right now there aren't a ton of available options for things you can scan - mostly it's promotional images from Empire magazine - so getting high up the rank chain isn't going to happen quickly. Presumably there will be more items to scan in the coming months, but for now you're going to top off as a Petty Officer with a bunch of available-all-over-the-internet pictures. Supposedly there will be more videos, images, and wallpapers to come, but for now it's pretty sparse.

While most of the scannable things are available online, there are a few that aren't. For one, you can get twenty points by visiting the future home of Starfleet Academy and loading up the app. I for one, am not about to make the thousands-of-miles trek out to San Francisco's Presidio for a measly twenty points. While many of us may never be able to get the geolocation points, anybody watching the Super Bowl The Big Game tomorrow will be able to to scan the commercial airing during the second quarter for exclusive in-app content.

Suspiciously (and somewhat disappointingly) absent from the app: J.J. Abrams's signature lens flares. At least it's notably better - or at least more aware of what it's supposed to be - than some other official Star Trek apps available in the App Store.

Samsung?s latest ad quietly pokes fun at Apple with references to trademark infringements

Samsung has released its latest ad which will also be the ad it will show during this Sunday?s Super Bowl. Samsung has a long running ad campaign that tries to make fun of Apple and this one is no different. In the ad, you can see three guys sitting around a table brainstorming ideas for the actual ad. During the conversation the three guys realise that they can?t say certain words without the fear of trademark infringement.

Seth Rogen and Paul Rudd are called in to pitch their ideas for Samsung's Big Game ad for The Next Big Thing, but they run into some hurdles. Follow #TheNextBigThing on Twitter and see what unfolds at http://www.facebook.com/SamsungMobileUSA

I suppose I will have to grant Samsung some leeway on this one as it is quite funny in a tongue in cheek sort of way. It also reminds me a bit of the Mac v PC ads that Apple used to produce a few years back. At the end of the day, you need a bit of humor in your life so I have no problem with ads like these.

What do you think of Samsung?s latest ad?
